Looking for advice on transfer Nursing Programs near Phila or anywhere in PA

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So I have been interested in Nursing for quite some time now! Hoping to get my BSN some day and work as an RN wherever I'm able to get in to and be a great amount of help! Ever since my Junior year in high school I have thought about a career in Nursing. I'll be honest, I wasn't the best student in high school. Barely maintained a 2.2 GPA, always goofed off. Never bad, just lazy. Come college, I started the same. I started at Community College of Philadelphia in Fall 2013. Had a rough first year and a half, did the same thing. Just goofed off, figured I could get by like I did in high school. After long talks with professors, counselors and parents, I finally started taking school more serious. I am now finishing up my Associates degree (Last class Nutrition and Pre- Calc, starting Fall 2016) and looking to transfer in to a Nursing program. My problem is now I just don't know where to. I've looked into so many programs seeing if they accepted transfer students, but I'm honestly scared to even apply. I'm afraid to get rejected because of my history in the beginning. I've passed A&P 1 with a C at first, then retook and got a B. Same thing with A&P 2. Recieved a C (Five points away from a B) now retaking for hopefully a much better grade. Finished Microbiology with a B, and Chemistry took it the first time, dropped it. Retook it, recieved a C. Thinking about taking it one last time to get a much better grade. As of right now, Summer 2016, I have a 3.01 GPA with 61 credits. I've been thinking about my mistakes everyday and I'm just scared that my dumb choices when I was younger are going to keep me from getting accepted into any transfer Nursing programs. I've truly changed though! I'm not that dumb kid, I actually take my school work serious. It's the only thing I worry about anymore! Anyone out there have any advice on what I should do, if I can even do anything at this point? Please let me know, I would truly appreciate it. Thank you to whoever responds :)

I'm not sure of how close these would be to where you live, but there is Harrisburg Area Community College for the LPN/RN program; they they are ranked 8th nationwide for LPN/RN courses. There is also Pennsylvania College of Health Science in the area.

Don't sell yourself short! A 3.01 is a solid GPA. You are obviously working hard and the classes you are taking aren't easy. PA is filled with a lot of great nursing programs from Diploma to BSN. Penn State has a stellar program, so does Pitt; so it's really all in where you want to go. Almost every major Pittsburgh hospital has a Diploma program, I'm not sure if Philly is the same way but it might be.

Figure out how much you want to spend, what type of program you want (diploma, ADN, BSN), do your research, and look around this site there are a lot of posts about schools in PA on this site :) Good luck!

I appreciate your reply! Sorry about getting back so late. I'm just finishing my last semester at Community College and still haven't found a program :/ More so because I'm nervous to apply. I have been able to pull up my GPA to be 3.17 and I still have this semester to finish up. I'm applying within the next 2 weeks to a few different universities, most local and 2 in different states. Going to see how things go. Wish me luck!
