Legitimate Online High School Diploma

A friend of mine wants to do nursing but does not have her GED or high school diploma. Are there any legitimate and accredited high school diplomas online or correspondence for 35 year olds?

She can study at home, or go to classes at a local school - there are lots of evening classes around, and they're usually free.

My school district offers virtual courses. She may want to check with the local school board to see if they offer something similar.
