As a parent I always preferred dosages based on weight. Children of the same age can vary greatly in size, and that impacts how medication affects them. One of the military clinics we used even gave out a chart with common meds and dosage by weight. One of the best parenting tools I ever got. (Now I can just Google it.)

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Never base a dosage on age, always go by the child's weight.

Have seen too many children under dosed and parents state, I gave Tylenol but it didn't help the fever, turns out they were getting under dosed.

Example a 2 year old who weighs 13kg gets a different dose than a 2 year old who weighs 20kg. The 20 kg child is getting under dosed.

Infants under 6 months never get IBU and infants under 3 months with a fever need to be seen by an MD

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Never a good idea to dose by age. Always by weight and not all adult drugs can be given to children. Basing on age per adult dose can be catastrophic as there are several drugs where the very young need higher mg/kg than an adult would such as Diastat and some seizure drugs due to body composition.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

In the US, all pediatric drugs are dosed by weight in Kilograms. Best wishes in school.
