I guess it's time to find a plan b...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm devastated, after reading a post on here about a girl that had a high GPA, was on the deans list, honor student, and didn't get excepted, because she made a few mistakes 10 years before and had a low GPA at a different college, I started thinking that sounds like my situation. I too had a hard time my first year or so of college, stuff I couldn't really control, and my previous school GPA is terrible. Sure enough I talked to the adviser that deals with the applications and she said that they will average out my GPA, which puts me at around an overall GPA of 2.4, and that's if I make a 4.0 at this school. I am in the process of looking at the 1 other school around here, but if they say the same thing I'm on to plan b. I don't even have a plan b yet, so if anyone has any suggestions on different medical fields I can get into that aren't as hard to get into or if anyone had this happen to them and has advice please reply.

If you dropped your classes after receiving your financial aid refund, then that is why you would be on suspension. They're trying to rule out "pell runners".

I had a stellar 2.85 as an undergrad (worked three days a week and had an active social life) and so when I wanted to go to grad school 7 years later they told me I wasn't a good candidate. I said, "You can't tell me I can never go to graduate school because I fooled around when I was 19 and 20." So they allowed as that was so, and told me to take a few graduate level courses as an unenrolled (nonmajor) student to show I could do the work. Did that, aced 'em, and aced the GREs. They accepted me and I started grad school with a 6-week-old but we both made it. :) (Now that baby has a PhD :) )

Show them you can do the work. Yes, you'll have to pay for it. It's one more way you're paying for your past, but it is what it is. Just do it. And ... more reliable contraception is a big help.

Most nursing schools I've looked into could care less about your overall GPA. They wanted a high prerequisite GPA. Meaning, you could have taken certain classes like Art History, Geology, etc and it wouldn't matter as long as your prerequisite grades (Micro, Chem, A&P1, A&P2, Nutrition, etc) are great. The schools I looked into are Texas Woman's University and Baylor University.

One more thing, please try not to compare your situation to this other poster. Just because it happened to her does not mean it will happen to you. She may have applied for a program that required a high overall GPA. There are so many variables that contributed to the outcome of her situation. If I were you, I would look for schools that only count the nursing prerequisite GPA in terms of grade requirements and apply there.

Thank you so much for your advice. I don't appreciate someone telling me to use more reliable protection when I'm married and I wanted to have a baby. I just took on too much and decided that waiting until my husband graduated from college would be better for all of us. Luckily I have found a school that will not count my previous gpa. I am going to work as hard as possible and hope for the best. Everyone makes mistakes, I'm taking responsibility for it and making sure I can do right this time. I won't give up until every school says no and even then ill go a different route!
