I may be mistaken. Their $1200 stipend certainly won't pay my mortgage and bills. Maybe they would like for me to sell my apartment before they put a lien on it. There are other more "realistic" scholarships out there.
I know..I've actually done it before as well. Just wonderful how they tax you when you take it out..and then tax you AGAIN the next year when you file your taxes. But, I have no choice..it's either that..or..nothing...

I am a single mother in nursing school that has a job and supporting myself. I have an EFC of 0. When I filled out my fafsa I had 50 cents in my bank account and I have more bills that I can pay. So as far as I am concerned the 1200 dollars a months stipend is A LOT of money. If you don't think it is and it won't support you then I don't think that this scholarship is meant for you.

i think the only thing you CAN do is call. they will look into the reason why it says your SSN already exists.

Again with me being nosy but way back when I used to work for a homestead (yes, an actual homestead, not a savings and loan; I said it was 'way back'!) people would take out what was then called "share loans" against their savings accounts. This froze the account as collateral against the loan and also reduced the interest rate on the loan. Perhaps there is something similar for your 401k so you wouldn't have to pay the tax AND the penalty PLUS have it count against earned income when you cash it out.

The way I keep throwing my around, I'm gonna work that EFC down to 0 yet!

I hope you do! lol I don't know if it's the same thing..but I can take a loan against my 401(k) but this is the thing..the loan has to be paid back before I leave my job! So, that makes no sense for me. Unless i can roll it over to something else..and then take out a loan. I don't know. But, I'd rather just throw caution to the wind..and cash it out.

Wow, what an awesome opportunity this scholarship is, and unfortunately, I can't even take advantage of it this year. I will have to wait until next year, and who knows if my EFC will still be 0 then. It is this year, but the application period for my school for fall ends MAY 15th!!! I won't even get my acceptance until the end of May, first week of June, so I can't apply.

Good luck to all of you who are can and are applying this year!!

Oops, I realize I said "good luck to all of you who are can", lol. I meant "who can and are." Too late to edit now, but just wanted to correct myself.
