How many classes and what classes are you taking?

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!!

I just starting taking my nursing pre-reqs (I already have English 101, but thats it). I work full time (I am 25) and am only able to take 2 classes at a time (This is going to take forever). My plan is to take the liberal arts classes 2 at a time and the sciences 1 at a time so I get a good grade. I was just wondering what everyone else is taking, and if there is any advice - are the sciences that hard? If I stick to my plan I should be dont with the pre-reqs by Fall 2011. I feel like that is too long. Can anyone offer me advice? Should I take more classes, I am just scred I may not get great grades. In fall I am taking english 102, and psychology 101 - then i was going to take a science class each semester and in the last 2 semesters finish my last 2 liberal arts classes. Is there anyone else on here that works full time and taking classes, if so what classes are you taking?

I just finished Anatomy and Physiology last semester. I am taking microbiology this summer. There is a two to three year wait after I finish micro, so I will take my English, Math and History in the fall. I did not think the Anatomy and Physiology were hard. I got a B and an A.

Good luck in your classes

I'm going part time but I am taking the last of my prereqs. I'm taking A&P and Statistics, both online.

You know your abilities and your schedule. If you think that 2 classes is all you can handle while working then just take 2.

Check your school's requirements. For some unknown reason, my school requires that you take your math BEFORE you can apply, along with 9 other credit hours. BUT the more science you have, the better. I would take one science every semester and pair it with an easier class. And remember, you can still work on some after you apply.

Hi,

I'm just taking 1 class this summer online, A&P II. This is my last pre-req. I'm starting the nursing program in August, God-willing. :uhoh3:I took my first 6 pre-req classes this spring. I don't work, so I am able to devote all my time to studying, which I definitely needed. I feel a little lazy taking only one class right now. I would take the 2 classes and see if you think you can handle one more class at a time. I agree with dee that you should pair the sciences with an easy class. I didn't think I could handle a full course load, but I did it. We underestimate ourselves sometimes. A&P is hard and a lot of work, but it's interesting.

Look into summer school, that might speed up your pre-reqs a bit. Since you work full time, if you're taking a science in the summer I would recommend only 1 per summer session since it's very condensed in a short period of time. Currently I am taking 1 Bio class this session, and A&PI in the next summer session. Liberal Arts might be OK taking with another class in the summer. It all depends how much time you will have to devote to school. When in doubt, keep it simple with just one class per session (usually 2 sessions) in the summer, and 2 or more in the fall/spring. You don't want to push it too much or you might not get great grades. Definitely take longer if you think that will ensure better grades.

As far as what's hard, I suppose it's subjective. One person's easy may be another person's hard.

These are the classes I'm taking for the summer:

May: 3-week Algebra course (based on the 16 week version)

June: ECG training (8 weeks)

Algebra (7 weeks)

Psychology - Human Development (web) 7 weeks/16 week version

Medical Terminology (web) 8 weeks/16 week version

Biology 8 weeks/16 week version

Advice: Be very honest about your schedule, strengths/weaknesses, and outside distractions. All of the above will play a pivotal role in your studies. Longer is better if it means you'll get a passing grade!

i am working full time and taking chemistry during 5wks summer semester. i started with my pre-reqs last summer and with chm finished i will have 30 credits not counting my cna class. at one point of time, i had 4 classes, cna school in the evening, and i also have two kids. i am done with api and apii. don't let the science classes scare you. just follow a simple rule: study and you will do well. i would suggest to start with science classes and pair them with eng, psy, mat because you will have a lot of those. don't wait with science or you will be taking pre-reqs forever. for example, i started with bio156 and mat092 last summer because i couldn't take ap until i finish bio156 and i couldn't take algebra before i take mat092 (mat was my weak subject). then last fall, i took api and algebra. this spring i finished apii, eng101, hcc130, hcc145, and cna class. now i am taking chemistry and i will be able to apply.

good luck.

Well for this upcoming semester (fall '08) this is what I currently have:

Drug Use & Abuse (online)

Science of Nutrition

Human Diversity

Geography of Human Diversity

[the last two are considered "area studies" and they're required for all students before graduating]

*if* I get into my program (I won't know for about another 2 1/2 weeks or so) I'll be adding:

Foundations of Nursing Practice I (with a lecture, clinical & LRC - learning resource center - which is basically a lab where we go and practice skills like venipuncture for IVS/drawing blood, etc etc etc)

Professional Role Development

...which would put me at around 19 credits hours, so I'll probably end up dropping the Drug Use & Abuse class (which is ANOTHER elective) so I'll have about 16-17 credit hours instead.

I'm running of electives to take. So far I've taken Medical Terminology, Basic Pharmacology & Study of Disease Processes (kind of like a pathophys class but a lottt easier than the Nursing Pathophys that I have to take) - if your school has classes like these I'd definitely try to take them!

I have a ton of pre-reqs to take as well. I am hoping to start them all in August and take 3 at a time. I'll have to take Eng 101 and some other basic courses too. Thankfully I can do most of them online. That will take me about 3 semesters including summer school. I am also taking my CNA course in October on weekends. (then I will be working full time) At's going to be hectic and crazy but I need to get it done so I can apply for NS in the Fall of 2009.

All of this with a husband and 3 kids.

I am registered for these classes for the fall semester:

Microbiology

Nursing Skill Acquisition

Intro to Nursing/Client System

and I want to add English Composition.
