How to get experience before starting the nursing program?

Hello I'm in the process of completing my pre reqs at golden west college in California. I've looked over the criteria for acceptance into their nursing program many times and I still feel confused on many counts. It seems like a lot of the people applying already know so much about nursing in general and I am a bit lost. One of the criteria was experience but if I haven't started the program how can I get nursing experience? I was curious as to any suggestions as to how I could do so. Thanks.
