How do certain charges impact clinical rotations?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I will be a first semester nursing student in the fall, and I was wondering how my misdemeanors in the past will impact my background check for clinicals? I have gotten tickets twice for driving with suspended license and they are about 3- 4 years old, and an arrest for failure to appear on a speeding ticket (was in another county and I forgot about it) that is 4 years old. It doesn't list any of these violations as getting you barred from clinicals, only things related to violence, drugs, and stealing. I was just wondering how much explaining I should prepare to do?

My hospital requires a copy of the court records plus a detailed explanation for every offense. Then they review the situation and make a decision on a case-by-case basis.

That is when applying for a job with your hospital? I am not sure yet if I will even have to have another background check because I had one with the ABI (Alabama Bureau of Investigation) and the FBI for my BA in Education a year ago. I was just trying to see what I might encounter. I appreciate the info.

For school they just need the dismissal paper from the judge. I had to get one of those to continue doing clinicals and I wrote an explanation of what happened. I had closed a bank account during my PCS to another duty station and didn't know that one of the checks didn't clear (papa johns HA!) so it became a hot check, didn't find out until 2 years later due to my change of address and being out of the country at the time. It was easy to take care of and they understood the situation.

You can get the copy of the dismissal judgement from the county or cities clerks office to allow you to continue doing clinicals at the hospital. Yes I had a FBI background check when I was in the military but usually schools do a background check on there own. Talk to your school about the situation once the background check comes back if nothing comes back I wouldn't stress about it. I don't know about the work part as I am still in nursing school.

That is for either applying for a job or for coming as a student for a clinical rotation. Students have to meet the same requirements as regular staff. That's a Joint Commission requirement.

I assume that I will have to explain it, but I can imagine that they see it a bit. There seems to be much discussion on these types of things.

I just looked at the form and saw something that made me feel a little better. My background check form actually categorizes everything you could be barred for... like violence stuff, drug stuff, sexual offender stuffl and things that prevent you from helping people receiving medicare or medicaid benefits. The only thing I saw that the misdemeanors I have would be crimes of deception, but it says it excludes shoplifting, petty theft, larcen, and bad checks. I see those more serious than any of my crimes so I feel better. Also, at the end of the page it says things that exclude you from clinicals are crimes relating to you not being able to help patients. I guess I should have just read it more carefully. Thanks for everyone's input!
