Help! Did anyone get into nursing schools with b or c's for bio classes?

Hi!

I still have 3 more semester until I can transfer from a local community college to a nursing program at either a cal state or community college. I go to Chaffey college in California and I'm currently scared about my anatomy class. I have a D. I think I am able to get a B by the end of the semester. I am just debating to see if I should drop it and retake it to get an A. My cumulative GPA is 3.77 and baccalaureate GPA is 3.57. Since I know some schools look for A's in sciences. But has anyone this year 2014 or last year 2013 got into a program with b or c's in any science classes? Does anyone here go to Cal State LA or Cal State San Bernardino? I want to see if it was hard to get in and what grades did you have back then for you entered to any cal state or community college programs in California. I am located in the Southern California. Please help me out!

Unless the school you're applying to says NO Cs or gives priority for those who have a B or higher, then you shouldn't worry. I dont think a B would be a problem, but you need to talk to your advisor and ask. For my school, my advisor said to avoid Cs(especially in sciences) at all costs. Are you going to applying to an accelerated programs? Because you talked about a baccalaureate degree. Some Accelerated BSN programs only look at your pre-reqs GPA, while others look at your previous degree GPA.

Thank you! Nope, accelerated will be tough! I posted 2 of my GPAs because I I'm not sure which GPA they look at. Are you in any nursing programs right now?

I was accepted into my program with a C in A&P II. I think when it comes down to it, they look at the grade, but cumulative GPA probably plays a bigger factor in acceptance. As long as there are so specific criteria such as, "B or better," then you should be fine! :-)

I apply in a few months for Spring 2015. So this is my last few weeks of pre-reqs, then A&P II in the summer because I didnt feel comfortable taking it with micro in the fall(you also have to get special permission to do that). A C doesn't rule you out of my nursing program because they look at your overall GPA(not just pre-req GPA), but its harder to recover from a C in a 4 credit hour class than a 3 credit hour class in my opinion. They have "C(2.0) or better" in the criteria for application, so you can get a C, it'll just lower your GPA. For your school, they will probably just look at your pre-req GPA and not the previous degree GPA since it isn't accelerated or anything.

It depends on the program and what they look at. My school goes off of a points system and A&P I and II are the most heavily weighted. My school goes off of 4 classes and Teas test. So it really depends on the program.

Thank you everyone! I'm now getting nervous if I should drop anatomy or not. If I drop it, it will push everything back and I will be behind by a year in order for me to apply. Any advices about taking a&p during summer?

My niece was pre nursing at CSULB and due to her receiving a C in Anatomy she let me know that there was no way she would get into their program.

So she switched majors to healthcare administration and graduated. She's now getting married and I'm unsure if she ever plans on going back to try and pursue nursing...

It would be rough I'm assuming to get in with a C in a course.

I personally got in to an ADN program with an A in English and anatomy and Bs in micro and physio.

My school would not let me retake a class to get a better grade. Only if I received a "F" or a "withdrawal ". Make sure you can retake it before you drop. I had "c's" in a couple pre req classes but my GPA was within their limits and I was in the lottery. If you go to a school where they go off grades : well you might want to retake those classes. Remember. Some community colleges accept combined Anatomy and Physiology class for the nursing program. But if you want to excel and get a BSN in the future , some schools don't accept that class and you will have to take them separately later. Your time is valuable. Make sure you utilize your time wisely and know what your end goal is and how to achieve it

I was wondering if I work much much harder in all my other classes, have a higher GPA at the end, and do all that is required to get into the nursing program, will those C's still affect my chances of getting in? I'm scared :( 1 is a prereq (chemistry), the rest are general ED classes. I read that my school looks at "Applicants are rated on their overall GPA, their GPA in selected pre-requisites, theirscore on the TEAS exam, and their experience in the health care field and/or anotherdegree."

I would try to figure out why I made Cs and evaluate my study skills. Then, I would try to retake as many as I possibly could and do extremely well in my prerequisite science courses. Good luck!!!
