Having to take A&P over again????

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all. I am (or was) a Fall 2014 Nursing hopeful, until I just got some not so good and irritating news. Just a little background. I already have BS in a different field and was on the fence for a while with what I really wanted to do, but I finally decided that I wanted to be a nurse. I figured I would go for my ASN at my local college. So, I registered and noticed the pre-reqs for getting into the program.

I saw (or thought) that I only needed Microbiology and lab, college algebra, psychology, and A&P 1 and Lab. I already took and passed the lecture A&P 1 but I withdrew from the lab, so I figured that I would only need the lab portion of it and I would hopefully be set for Fall 2014 entry (app deadline is May 14, 2014). After all my credits from the University and the college transferred over, my A&P was not counted. I immediately contacted my advisor who told me that because this particular college's A&P courses are integrated and interrelated, they are combined for one comprehensive grade, meaning I HAVE to take them together. Has anyone ever heard of that?? Even though they may be interrelated, it's essentially the same course, right? Why would it make a difference?

A&P was a very difficult class for me and I passed through many blood, sweat and tears. This was a class that had me wanting to crawl up and cry a lot which is why I withdrew from the lab, it was just too much. Any advice on how to handle this? Thanks in advance.

My school had integrated A&P classes, too. I think it's pretty common. I'm not sure what the work around would be, but I hope you find one. I would hate to have to take that class again.

Specializes in Hospice.

Our A & P is with lab, I am not sure if we could withdraw from lab and pass the lecture portion. I don't think so. If you have to take it again, at least you will breeze through the material! And most likely get an A which is great for your GPA. (Trying to find a positive for ya here.)

Our A&P I/II have a lecture and lab that must be taken together and you must pass both parts. Good luck!!

That's how it is where I am from. You must take the lecture and lab at the same time. It counts as one total grade. I have however been to a university that you could take thee tyre portion in semester and the lab portion in another semester. I thought it was odd that way,

My a&p are seperate and both include lab and lecture. So youd have to retake the whole class over at my school. Itll be easier second time around it'll be like a refresher. But itd still suck to retake any class over.

My college has Anatomy w/ lab and Physiology w/lab as two separate 5 credit courses. The lab is included within the class, you can't take it separately at my school. My husband only needed a Chemistry lab, but had to take the whole Chemistry class over again because they don't just have the lab separate. That stinks that you might have to take the whole class over :(!

Yes I've heard of this it's actually how all of my science classes were set up. Micro and my A&P's were combined!! There was no way to take them separately. Good luck tho and the good part is you've already taken the class before so you're familiar with the material.

They also call these classes "the weeding out classes".

Ours counted as two grades. Lecture was worth 3 credits an lab was worth 1.

Yup! That is true! My Chemistry teacher even said it was a weeding out class to see who can cut it in nursing school. I feel like they make some of these classes harder than they need to be.
