Got a D in a non pre nursing Course

Hey guys!

So I took calculus this semester under the assumption I was going to do premed, but I was exposed to the Nursing world and realized I'd much be happier helping others as a Nurse! Unfortunately I just got my grade back and I have a D (and I was so confident for the final (I digress)). Anyways my dream school for ABSN is NYU and I was wondering if I should retake the course or not worry because it is not a pre req for nursing school? (This is the first D in my educational history, so I'm very worried)

My GPA stands at a 3.3 and I am aiming to go higher.

What are the GPA requirements for this ABSN program? Around these parts, the minimum is pretty high and the people getting in at not at the minimum GPA. I worry that you have a grade (even if in a non-nursing course), that is dragging your GPA down.

From what I have read the requirements are C and above in all required pre req classes which are developmental psych, anatomy and physiology 1 and 2, Chemistry with lab, nutrition, microbio and statistics.

Yes, those are the requirements, but you are going to be in competition with candidates who have almost perfect cumulative GPAs. I'd try to find a message board for NYU nursing students and ask the question.

If you're taking pre-reqs and were thinking of going pre-med I'm assuming that this is your first degree? If so, why not just apply directly to NYU's school of nursing as an undergrad instead of getting another degree and then doing their ABSN program?

Get in touch with a recruiter for the school you want to go to and ask them directly. The school can tell you if you should bother or not. I wouldn't put myself another dollar in debt because someone on this site told me it's a good idea.

I am almost done with my major requirements, so I only have the pre reqs left, so I thought I should graduate and then pursue an absn :)

If nursing is what you are wanting to do, then I would go for it and do it. Calculus is definitely a math for doctors and engineers. In nursing, they do not do calculus. Some nursing programs do have algebra or college math courses. The nursing school that I did had statistics and it was hard at first to understand, but I got the hang of it when I saw it in a real-world research article. I would do some research on your nursing program that you are interested in and go from there. I wish you the best. Marcy CNA

I would not retake a class that I knew I was likely to struggle with it while attempting to complete prerequisite classes. Doing excellent in prerequisites is more likely to be helpful than improving your grade in an irrelevant class at the expense of your prerequisite grades.

I just applied and was accepted for an ABSN program this year. I had one D on my transcript and was terrified. However, all my pre-reqs were A's and all my other grades in my undergrad were As and Bs. I would just say continue to work as hard as you can in the rest of your degree and make sure to get all A's in your nursing pre-reqs. :up:
