Financial Aid

Hi ladies! First of all I'm a newbie here and I think this is an awesome site!!! I have a question about transcripts and financial aid. First off, my transcripts have arrived at the community college I'm doing my nursing prereqs at. The college I was waiting on to send on the third one couldn't send the transcript to the college because I have a balance. I'm receiving financial aid but I'm really afraid they may make me pay for courses and books when I go back to get things cleared up with financial aid. They need to evaluate what I have taken over the years so I cn get my classes. I'm really nervous that things may not go right. Has anyone else ever been in this situation? Or do the colleges even get involved with balances?I couldve sworn I was at a zero balance when I left that college. I'm really excited about going back to school after 20 something years and I know that nursing is what I want to do. My kids are grown almost and it's time for me.

At my community college if you owe money to financial aid, or have defaulted you have to clear it up before you can get more financial aid. If you owe a balance to the school they put a hold on you, and you have to clear it up before you can check out books from the library, register for classes or just about do anything. So take care of it ASAP.

This very same thing actually happened to me. I had to pay the balance from my previous school in order to have my transcripts sent. Your current school won't do anything about a balance from another school. The problem will be when your previous school sends that balance that you owe, to a collection agency. It will effect your credit and much worse, effect your ability for future help. You should get it taken care of.

Ok, I hope I can understand this correctly you are in school and taking pre reqs for nursing. Your FA dept may have knowledge that you owe another school funds and the other school will not release your transcripts to the current school. I am going through this similar situation, and I did not have the funds to just pay the other school off. What happen to me was the other school I owe I withdrew because the classes I was taking was useless in that I could not transfer them to another school. So what I did was this.
1. I enrolled into a state college online with a school that did not require my transcripts from this other college.
2. I collected my FA and I contacted the other school and asked them did they take settlement offers.
3. The average nursing program is 1 year to complete my pre reqs so I took the settlement and took the FA from my current school (that did not require my transcripts) and I sent the school that I did owe that balance to payment over the year to payoff the balance.

Once I am done with my pre reqs I will have paid off my balance. I will transfer out of the online program and make application to a nursing program.

Now I don't know if this is actually the situation you are going through but if it is similar and your current school is actually calling you into the office for this, you maybe able to explain this problem to them. Also if you put this other school on your college application and this school did not wait until all your transcripts were in then you very well could fight the point that you did not false any information to them on your application, you just throught all your transcripts were in, and this was the reason you was receiving FA in the first place. If this is the case they may put a hold on your records but they should not charge you any monies. Also, the only way they would charge you is that they sent funds back (ie Pell Grant, Student Loan funds ect....) so you might want to look at your FA record check out NSLDS you can google this and that may help. Good luck . I don't know where you live but I would be more than happy to tell you the school I attended currently and they did not require my prior transcripts. I had to take over one or two courses again but at least I can continue.

if you owe another school and they won't release your transcript your new school may not disburse your financial aid. Lots of schools don't disburse aid until all the transcripts are received. Some school give you one semester to get the transcripts in

btw are these 2 schools within a city or state system?this happened to me at cuny city tech because i dropped classes 1 day late and had to pay 25 percent out of state tuition...it was ridiculous.i dropped bc i decided to go to queens college where i was viewed as a resident. I informed queens of my balance at city and the financial advisor called them and argued with them for me. In your situation if you had financial aid that was sufficient to pay your tution, fees and books then determining the cost of the overbalance and setting up a payment plan is a good affortable option

I have the same problem as you. i have been owing money to my previous school since '03. instead of having my classes transferred i just decided to take everything over. this will result in me having to take 24 classes but i really didn't want those grades on my transcript being that i wasn't much of a student at the time.

trice77 this is what I was suggesting, problem is with this some states colleges will demand you to have in all transcripts and they don't care if you are transfering these grades in or not. I felt this was a stupid policy because if these schools have open enrollment, and you can see that I am not collecting FA from two different schools in the same term, what else do you need to know? however, it is the requirements in some states not all, so I take online classes in a state where that is not the requirement, I am collecting my FA and when I contacted the other school back to make them aware of this, they see there balance did not stop me from continuing on with my studies and they become more opt to offer a settlement on the balance. I make payments on the settlement through my financial aid, and once I am completed with the payments arrangements my preq reqs will be done and I will order all my transcripts and just transfer out to a local college to complete my nursing core
