Figuring grades, help

  1. How do I figure my grade for a class based on points? THe instructor doesn't post them in % form, just the points we earned on an assignment or test. I add up the points I've earned and divide it by the total possible points right? Because I get a reasonable % when I do that, about what I thought I would get.

Second, the instructor will drop our lowest exam score so how does that factor in when I'm figuring it up? My lowest exam score was an 88. Total of 50 questions worth 2 points a piece on that exam. Wouldn't dropping the exam hurt my grade?

*sigh* Too confusing. I am too impatient to wait for him to get final grades out :spin:

You're figuring the % correctly. As for dropping the lowest test score, usually that means you subtract the points you received from your total points, AND subtract the total points possible for that quiz from the overall total possible points. Then refigure the percentage.

I have to chuckle beccause this was driving me nuts last week. I too have an exam worth 88 that needs to be dropped. say I have 545 points out of 614. I drop 88 off of my 545 = 457 then drop 100 pts (the total the last test was worth) off of 614.. so I get 514. So then to figure out the percent divide 457 by 514 X100= 88%

    hope that helps.

Are any of the grades weighted? For example, if you have four exams, worth 25% each, and you drop your lowest then each exam would be out of 25 points instead of based on how many questions were on it. What does your syllabus say? I'm a math geek, and I'll compute it for you if you want. I know the exact % I need on both of my finals to maintain my A's already.
