Fall 2012 Microbiology Students -- STAND UP!

Almost half way through Micro! We don't have a midterm in lecture or lab. We've had 1 lecture exam (94%), 1 lab exam (95.5%), 2 lab quizzes (110% and 97.5%), plus several "pre-lab checks". My instructor offers bonus points on all quizzes and exams as well as bonus assignments (worth 5 points each for lecture and 3 points each for lab). So far, my overall grade is 102.4%!

That's my other pet peeve....people talking while the professor is lecturing. [...] This is now becoming a Microbiology/Therapy session...LOL :) Now, back to our regularly scheduled conversation...

I want in on the therapy session! We have the same problem in our class: people talking over the instructor. We've also had issues with a lot of traffic in and out of the room during the class. Enough people have complained that he said something to the entire class about it last session. A friend of mine overheard some students talking after class: "Doesn't he understand we're all recently out of high school? Sometimes FB and our social lives are more important."

HEL-LO! Are you kidding me? First of all, I'm long out of high school, and so are many of the people sitting around me. Secondly, I'm PAYING for this class. I WANT to HEAR what the instructor has to say. You want to socialize? There's plenty of room in the building lobby.

I'm sorry to say I'm not surprised by that behavior though. I wish I were, but I'm not.

Awesome, RunnerRN2b! That's one awesome grade. I would love to have a grade like that, but I'll be happy enough to maintain my A.

New to this thread, but also taking Micro this semester(In Arizona) and at midterms as well. Though my proff hasn't posted any grades yet I know its kicking my butt. Its as though he is talking another language, ,and most of my classmates feel the same. Hopefully I am overthinking it, since I've gotten high grades in all my other science classes. We just took our first exam on thursday and hopefully will know Tuesday how i did. I was confident but nonetheless nervous.

Wow! I can't believe the nerve of some of these kids. FB & social lives are more important??? Are you kidding me??? I'll bet their parents (who are probably paying for their classes) would just love to hear that statement come out of their mouths!

I'm in the same boat as you...I'm spending my HARD-EARNED savings to take these classes. I WANT to hear my instructor. I think they should be kicked out of class and not allowed back in until they can act like an adult!!!

Taking our 2nd lab exam today on selective, differential & selective/differential media. Plus identifying morphology of Gram stained bacteria under the microscope. Should be a pretty good exam. Not too difficult.

The lecture exam is next week. This one is going to be an absolutely DIFFICULT test because it encompasses cellular respiration (glycolysis, oxidative decarboxylation, Kreb's cycle & oxidative phosphorylation), fermentation, identifying unknown organisms/lab tests and all antimicrobial properties of antibiotics and other drugs. It's a LOT of info to digest and retain!!! Luckily, some of the antibiotic properties tie into what we're studying in Pharmacology, so I feel like both classes are boosting each other in the info dept. However, I'm just having a hard time keeping all the info straight. It's going to be a tough exam! I wish we could just do stuff in the lab :D

I have studied more for this test than I did the last test. I feel fairly confident on the bacteria. We will have 25 short answer questions (our class is guessing it will be all on bacteria). We will have 55 multiple choice and 1 discussion question. I have easily put 60 hours in studying for this test. At this point I am just going back over to make sure I can spell the bacteria (If we get even one letter wrong, she will mark it wrong which is :poop:. I am not stressing out so much this time. I have spent 2-4 hours a day reviewing. Just trying to keep terms fresh and relax as best as I can.

I came late to the therapy session, but I want to vent too! LOL, my biggest pet peeve is people who don't work through any problems, read the textbook, or actually study, then hold up the entire class to complain about their grades with the professor. And this is a lot of the "grown-up" students doing it this time! It is never enough to just look at a list of topics or a study guide and think, "Oh, I recognize that word, I must know what I'm doing." You can be super-smart and still need to study; it's OK. I just feel like people get on my professor's case way too often for efforts that *they* didn't make while they had a chance.

*End rant* Anyway. So far this class is still going well. The past two weeks have been pretty trying, though. I started my new job as a CNA, and when I get home I have to fight myself to not collapse into bed; so study time has been at a premium. I finally got some downtime this weekend, though, so I'm at least caught up on homeworks and labs and whatnot. Lesson of the day: no matter how rewarding this field is, it is some HARD. WORK.

Lesson of the day: no matter how rewarding this field is, it is some HARD. WORK.

I have learned in the past couple of weeks that all of the hard work that goes into your education to even get to the point of working in the field helps make it more rewarding for you on a personal level. You know how many hours and sleepless nights went into reaching your goal and it makes it even better.

Now Im not sure if you were talking about the classes being hard work or your CNA job, but either way I stand by what I said..... lol ;)

2nd lecture exam was today. Wow! That was a killer!!! Glycolysis, oxidative decarboxylation, Kreb's cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, fermentation, enzymes, antimicrobials, modes of action & spectrum of antimicrobials, mearsuring bacterial growth & laboratory procedures. It was SOOOO much to cover this time. I'll be surprised if I even get a B on this one. We had 50 questions of multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank & short answer plus EIGHT essay questions  I'm so glad I have bonus points saved up from my quizzes to apply to this exam.

This semester is now officially halfway over...yay!!!! :D :D :D
