Extra classes while in nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Helloo all!

So I got great news that I am accepted to the honors college of the University I am transferring to to get my BSN. (I have gotten my AA in pre-nursing from a community college). The hon col offers a transfer scholarship for FULL tuition! However, now that I have looked into it i have learned it is not just a GPA and SAT requirement, but you have to take honors courses every single semester too (gosh not even once per year!) The honors college is separate from any other college, and you have to take 2 extra classes per semester (on top of your other course work) to remain in the honors college (also maintaining a GPA of >3.5). The nursing program is one track, meaning i cannot take it at my own pace, i go with their plan. I have planned out my financial situation around this full tuition scholarship and now i'm so upset because i don't know if i can handle these extra classes while keeping my gpa very high. Has anyone on here taken extra classes/ or done things on the side of nursing school to share some time saving tips or warn me away from this or encourage me? I'm looking if they have other scholarships they can give me, but i doubt it will cover full tuition and plus I'm not considered "in-need" but my mom is not supporting me other than letting me live at home, and once i move out, that's over:/. I have managed to work during pre-reqs to save enough to hold me over car- and food-wise, and i was planning to take out a loan 10,000/year to cover a dorm. I am so frustrated that i have gone to a community college for 2 years so i don't come out of school with enormous loans, and without this scholarship i will be over the national average just for going to a state university 2 Years!!!!! :(((( I have worked so hard and I feel unrewarded. The University I am transferring to is FIU. if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Should I just take a year off to work? if anyone can give advice I would greatly appreciate it.

...and I wish you well on your spring breaks :D

Hey I am in FIU's nursing program now and I suggest you not working when you are in it. The program is pretty intense and needs all of your attention. Honestly, sorry to burst your bubble but it's probably better to just stay living with your parents till you finish nursing school. I know someone now who is also in the program who is in the honors program. she doesn't work and from what I hear all you have to do is write an extra essay a week for that class, and she makes sure its online.

The program is going to be mainly online the first two semesters lol just a heads up. the first is mainly lab time though, you will see what I mean. have you been accepted yet, they usually dont notify till summer...

Thank you for the response(: It's crazy you're going to FIU and found my post! Congrats on getting in, I wish you well in your program and nursing career! I have a question: I live an hour north from FIU, which is why I was thinking it'd be wise to save myself the 2 hours every day in driving plus saving money on gas by living on-campus. In your opinion do you still think it'd be wiser to stay home? when i talked to an advisor there he said no one has ever done the nursing program and honors program! yayy thats comforting to know I'm not gonna be the first aha. And i am waiting to hear back eek!
