Can a teacher do this?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Ok so I had a midterm yesterday. I have been studying for a little over two weeks straight for this example. I would go over the material she has posted online (she likes to do everything on power int) she also just does her lectures based on the power point. She gives us a little extra info during the class but nothing more then a page of notes. So I went over the stuff she gave us, I used the practice quiz online over and over and looked a things online and bit of the text book. I went into the test feeling pretty good and confidant I knew the material. When I got the test I was shocked to discover that the questions were in far more detail that she went in class. It was beyond the notes she gave us... We had several questions that ask you to put things in particulate order.... Like lots of them which I found strange because we didn't have much time.I'm aware this probably sounds like I'm whining but, I found myself rushing through the test because I was running out of time. I had to guess on so many questions because I couldn't read them all. I finished two minutes before she said pencils down. When I looked up, there was probably 30 or 40 % of the class that still hadn't finished. I asked other people what they thought and they thought the test was outrageous as well... I guess I could be whining but I keep thinking if I'm paying good money for tuition, and not being out in a situation she I'm being taught material I'm going to be tested on... It doesn't seem fair! Can anything be done about this?

Our college has a message board with info on teachers and classes and I'm SO thankful for them! The original teacher I had for my A&P 1 has horrible reviews and basically teaches like the OP is describing which is NOT for me. I don't need someone to hold my hand but it had been 15 years since I had been in school and that would have been a super shock to my brain lol. My current teacher only uses the power points but she draws out pictures on the board and gives real life examples so we can comprehend some of the harder material. She hands us a packet for each chapter that matches the power points and I high light everything she says to "take note" of. Everyone has a different style of learning and having reviews on teachers is so important IMO so that students can be sure their matched with someone who teaches how they learn best. I'm a very visual learner so for me, my teacher is a god sent!

That's what you aren't getting. We HAVE gone through this.We have figured out that the there is too much info for the the teacher to cover everything in class and we had to be responsible for the rest ourselves.Everything in the book is fair game. Can a teacher use any of it on a test? Yes.
Ok seriouslythisisgetting annoying I dont know why people are not reading what I'm saying. All I'm wanting is for my teacher to notify us the things we need to know for the test.I'm not asking for the teacher to teach me every single thing. I'm not asking for someone to hold my hand. I'm not whining about the work.I WANT TO BE ALERTED ON WHAT I WILL BE TESTED ON.And if I'm still not making myself clear, an e.g. Class, for the test you must review and understand in sequence the blood flow of the heart, where it goes, and how it's transported.I hope this makes sense.

You were notified by the teacher of what was fair game for the test via the syllabus. There are reasons professors do not spell out what exactly will be on the test, because then students will study only what is on the test when they need to learn everything necessary. Just like lecture time is not sufficient to cover everything, neither will a test be able to cover everything that should have been learned.

Exactly. You are not just studying stuff because it will be on the test, you are studying it because you need to know it.You HAVE been alerted as to what you will/can be tested on.All of it.

Without reading all the super long posts here, my two cents is that from experience, some instructors are better/more thorough than others, but ultimately it's your responsibility to absorb the material. I get what you're saying because I've been in your shoes. If you feel that strongly about it and u have classmates that do as well, take it to the instructor. I've learned that if I'm just not getting it in the classroom, I peruse the Internet and YouTube and usually that helps. Good luck! The semester is almost over!

It happens and sadly there really isn't much you can do about it but just do your best to work through it. In college (nursing will be my second degree), I had teachers who broke everything down great in lecture and 98% of what they talked about in class was on the test. Then I had a couple teachers who were like yours and I struggled getting through class and passing because it seemed like hardly anything they talked about in class was ever on the test. Hang in there, maybe talk to your professor and ask her if there are any resources or other areas in your text she suggest you study more to give you a better grasp on what might be on the tests.

Makes a ton of sense, but then nursing school would be 10 years in length. Quit complaining. You must know it all to pass your exit, you must know it all to pass NCLEX, you must know it all to be a competent nurse. Get over it.

^ This is what I was talking about before somewhere in the middle of this thread. Lol.

Yup, time to walk away. The OP is only interested in hearing that she's right, the teacher's wrong, the teacher has to tell them WHAT exactly to study or else that's not fair and its not what she's paying for. OP accuses many of the responders that that aren't understanding what she's saying when it clearly goes both ways.

OK, seriously. It is CLEAR that your instructor is not going to do this. S/he expects you to study it all, as ANY of it could show up on an exam. You've been told this over and over by nurses who HAVE been there, you keep regurgitating the same thing "I want to be told WHAT to study", we've told you "study it ALL". Time to grow up
