Biology and Chemistry next quarter! - page 2

I did something that many people think is stupid. I signed up for Chemistry 101 and Biological Science 201 (introduction to biology). The only other class I have is art. Anyway, a few people have... Read More

I was in the same position as you. I had to take both in one semester or it would have taken me longer to do my prereqs. I ended up accelerating my bio class too! Got it done in 8w instead of 16w. I just studied my buns off, and got tutoring for the chemistry. It's actually not that bad as long as you don't let yourself fall behind, EVER. Then you will probably be fine. I also had a third class, psych and that was easy.

You can do it! Good luck.

BTW, I got an A in bio and the lab, a B in chm and an A in chm lab.

I know to go for above the requirements. The nursing school I'm going to requires a 3.0 in all of the pre-requisite sciences (which as Chemistry 101, Organic Chemistry, Microchemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, and Nutrition). The Biology class I am taking isn't a require pre-req for the school, but is a require pre-req to get into Anatomy, so it will be counted as an elective. I am going to work really hard, though, to get an A in biology too, because I know every little thing counts.

You're the 1st person I've heard that had to take o-chem for nursing school! Wow! That class is a bear and I don't wish it upon anyone. I'm really surprised they require that of you...unless it's for a CRNA program.

No, this is just for a BSN. They also require an entirely separate Microchemistry course for those who are at their university taking the pre-requisites, but since none of the other colleges are yet to offer it as its own course, they are not requiring transfer students to have Chemistry 101, Organic Chemistry, and Microchemistry just yet. I don't know if that will change in the future, though. I have two "backup" universities I will be applying to and one of them requires Organic Chemistry as well. I hope it won't be too bad! :uhoh21:

I need inorganic, organic, and biochemistry in order to be accepted to my program. Oragnic wasn't too bad - I just finished the final and will come out with an A

!!!! That is just nuts! Organic chem is generally required for premeds and prepharm and PA's etc. I can't believe they're going to start making nurses take that class! O-chem is a weed out class for premed and prepharm etc. It was probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. The 1st semester of o-chem is difficult but not as difficult as the 2nd semester. Hopefully, you'll only have to take the 1st semester then. It sounds like they're just trying to get money. I mean if a student fails that class, they'll end up trying to take it again. O-chem is generally a 5 credit class but you may find a 4 credit class. And people thought A&P was hard. Oh Lordy!

congrats on your a! i know what you went through to get it! i ended up with an a too, but it was still one of the hardest classes i've ever taken. it may also depend on the instructor too. i was in a class where we had to teach ourselves. longroadahead, the classes you have to take are the same prereqs for med school! i guess nursing school is becoming so competitive that maybe they feel they need to throw those classes into the mix to get the cream of the crop. wow! that's all i can say!
