best self-prep materials for GRE

  1. Hi all,

What's the best self-prep material to use for the GRE just in case I decide to pursue a nurse practitioner degree? I don't want to pay for a prep course. Thanks!

I recommend Kaplan's individual module books for the verbal, quantitative and essay writing sections on the test. I got each of them at Barnes & Noble for around $18 each. The only section I'm worried about is the math section, so I bought ARCO's GRE/GMAT math review book from b&n, and it's great!!. I'm finding it very easy to review all that old dusty algebra/geometry stuff I haven't used since HS.

My husband and I used Barron's GRE book with CD-Rom and it was a lifesaver for us both. Highly recommended.

Thanks rachael. Did it include computerized practice tests to simulate the real test? Also, how long did it take you to prep for the GRE?

I'm gonna take the prep course especially since the new format change for 07.

Yep, that's what the CD was for. The book gave lots of sample questions too, plus how to prepare for each section and some great tips...but the CD-ROM, if I remember, had 6 complete tests on it? (I think)

I spent about 2 months prepping, my husband only about 3 weeks prepping. But we both say without the book/CD, we would've been hosed.

I only bought the ARCO GRE Review book, and felt like the math questions in the book were so much easier than what was on the test. I was very unpleasantly surprised on test day! To be fair, I only studied for about a week and most of that was in between partying on New Year's Eve weekend, and I still did pretty well.
