Applying to nursing school

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Okay hey everyone I just became a new member and was wondering if anyone could help me with some questions. I finish my pre reqs in the spring of 2016, and will be applying to Baptist in San Antonio, Texas A&M corpus, SAC, and Texas state. Does anyone know if I am able to apply to school while still taking my pre reqs??

Welcome!

You can most certainly apply to these schools' various nursing programs while still completing your prerequisite coursework.

However, since the admissions committee has no grades upon which to base their decision to admit you, do not expect to be taken seriously as an applicant until you complete your prerequisites. The truth is that applicants who have completed all their prerequisite courses will likely receive priority.

I only ever found one program that allowed it. Those that do, make it much more difficult to get admitted if you have classes in progress.

Also nursing school is something you don't want to rush into. Taking time to relax and decompress prior to the program is invaluable

I understand! I just feel really lost! The only pre reqs I have left are micro and A&P 2 then I graduate and will be able to apply. I just didn't know if I should start the applying process now. I've already started to get my hep B shots, and will be CPR certified soon. I just don't want to be waiting last minute to do things. Does anyone have any suggestions for study guides I should buy for the TEAS?

You can typically apply with pre-reqs in progress. Check the programs you are interested in to see if there are pre-reqs that HAVE to completed at time of application and how many you are allowed to have outstanding. (One program I applied to only required A&PI and II at time of application, but you have to have a plan for the rest, another wanted 3 out of 4 science courses complete at time of application so it varies).

Typically the more pre-reqs you have done at the time of application the better because schools can then judge based on your actual success in the pre-reqs. Given you have only 2 courses left to complete you may want to apply now. I'm not sure of the deadlines for those programs but many BSN programs require applications be in by Dec - Feb time from for Fall quarter start. If these are ADN programs then the time frame is frequently shorter between admission and program start.

I agree with the others regarding pre reqs. It just depends on the program. I just took the teas and didn't study as much as I should have, but I still did well. I used the ATI book. This was great for math and reading as well as English. It goes over concepts that will be covered and has a few practice tests. But I also downloaded an app for my phone. It was ten dollars, but well worth it. I was able to practice questions all the time, if I was in line or waiting etc. it gives you a chance to see how the questions are and some of the topics that may be covered. I hope this helps! Good luck.
