Any older people in pre-nursing?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now! :yeah:

i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.

anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.

people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.

anyone else over 40 like me? :coollook:

Your post made me smile. I am 37 and will be 40 when I am a nurse. I feel as young as ever. My confidence and experience will only help me as a student.

I believe one of the keys to a long happy life is constant education. Learning new things keeps your brain youthful and sharp.

I plan on being one of those 100 year-old witty bitties that people love to be around!

I am 46 but am actually trying to get into the Respiratory Program....alot of the pre-req's are the same. I have learned so much since being a part of this site...I amy cross over to Rn sometime ltr

Just completed my first quarter of prereqs (actually, it was prereqs for the prereqs :p) at 41 y/o, I'm also taking the A & P I in the fall). My classes are at night too....they did lean toward younger people, but I was hardly the only older one there. I figure my life experience & been-there common sense have to count for SOMETHING! There's lots of us like you & me on here if you look. PM me anytime if you wanna talk..............

Dancinagain, That's GREAT you're going back to school... and the same community college too. Good for you! :yeah: You're never too old to learn is my philosophy! I'm a 40 (almost 41) year old mom of 4 kids. I have one more semester of prereqs and then I'll start applying to nursing programs. I wonder when I get into a program if I'll be the oldest one there too! I've been taking my prereqs since 2006 but I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Just give your best and you'll achieve your goals!!! :flwrhrts:

you will find lots of company on this board. there are so many of us "older" students here and no you won't be the oldest in your night class, probably not even in your nursing classes :D.

btw, i'll be 41 when i finish if all goes well and i start my nursing classes in the fall of 09 but if i have to wait another year, so be it, i'll only be 42 when i graduate, still plenty of years of working left.

Hey yall I'm the oldest,If all go well i be 47 YRS OLD BSN!!

Good Afternoon everyone,

I am 42, will be 45 when I graduate, hopefully. Just started to take my pre-reqs this summer, so far so good. I, also am taking evening classes and there was a good mix of ages, a few older than I.

yeah, go for it!

I'm 43 and will be starting NS this fall. I'll be 45 when I graduate. I've always been one of the older students in the class, but that didn't bother me in the least. Congrats on getting back to school and following your dreams!

Sorry to say I have you beat! I am 50 and thought I would be starting the RN program this fall, but no go. So....if I get in NEXT year I'll actually be 53 when I graduate. Aarrgg! As the OP (I think) said, I'll be that age anyway. Might as well be following my heart. I figure I will still have 15 or so years to work--way too long to NOT be what I want to be. :nurse: I have every intention of going on to get my BSN as soon as possible afterwards, maybe even go the NP route. That wasn't what I had in mind when I started this journey almost two years ago, but I have been bitten by the bug.

I have to admit that I was the oldest in almost all my pre-req and non-nursing classes (although there were a couple in micro who I think were a few years older). I'm not crazy about it, of course, but it's really no big deal. I don't "feel" my age and manage to stay fit and healthy. One big advantage of going to a community college versus a four-year college is there are likely to be a lot more "non-traditional" students like us, so you don't feel quite as much of a fish out of water. I say :wlcmblks:, GO FOR IT and good luck!

Just graduated a 2 year RN program at 56 y/o. For some reason the program admitted a bunch of 45+ students my year so didn't feel at all odd. We pretty much all graduated, and we were all A & B students.
