Depends on the anatomy class you have. In ours we had to dissect a cat. The cat itself wasn't too bad, especially once the fur was off... but the smell of the preservative was pretty awful.

In general in the class the worst thing you'll see is what is in the textbook, but in the lab- it depends on if you have to do a cat, or if you have stuff sealed into that plasticine stuff- which is less gross than the cat, in my opinion....

A&P 1 was not gross, A&P 2 might be because in our school we will have to handle fetal pigs. I saw students working on them, they were kept in ziploc bags in baking pans BUT they didn't smell to my knowledge.
A&P requires a lot of studying, more than any other class I ever took.
I had a terrible teacher and that added stress.
Make sure you sign up for the best teacher that you can get and you should be fine. Good luck

We have a cadaver at our school. We get a new one every year. Aside from that we have buckets of different systems- hearts, lungs, GI, urinary etc... there is no blood or anything. It is all preserved in alcohol, so it may not be as gross as you think. It's actually fascinating to see how our body works first hand.

Depends on your class and what you will be doing, and what you consider gross too

I loved my anatomy class, we dissected a frog, a sheep's brain, cow's eye, cow's heart, and a fetal pig.

For lecture, prepare to study, study, and study some more, but if you love science like I do, then you will enjoy it.

I will definitely need prayers. I know I am serious though, when I know all of this and I still want to do it.

We just got some new cadavers this year (the last ones where 30 yrs old)
The only gross things was when one of the cadavers bile started to leak out mysteriously. I like anatomy. My favorite cadavers where half bodies. One was a mans pelvis cut in half and the other was a man head cut in half. Great teaching tool!

When my teacher held up the text book the first day of class and said that by the end of the semester our brains would be that much thicker with knowledge he was not kidding. I found Anatomy to be fairly easy. I think mostly because I took Physio first, which is much harder, not to mention when you take it before anatomy...but it was still a big releif last week when I complete my lab final with a 98% and my lecture final on monday.

I got an A in Anatomy and was allowed to be a teaching assistant. The TA's actually get to disect the new cadavar we recieved in a special disection course. We skin the whole body and remove all fat and other connective tissues so that the students just see organs, muscles, the cardiovascular system, and bones. I really liked learning off of our cadavers (once I got over the icky smell). But seeing the dead lady, intact, that I am supposed to dismember is alot harder than I thought it would be. I refuse to be in the room alone with her body. I thought I was a bada@@ fro taking the disection course, but it turns out I'm a wuss.

You actually spend a good deal of your time memorizing the names of anatomical structures. Even when you do any kind of dissection, the purpose is to learn and memorize the names of the anatomical stuctures. If you don't eat a few hours before going to the lab you won't have anything in your stomach to puke. Dry heaves is way better than blowing chunks! :chuckle

I am a TA as well. Who would think we'd volunteer to do it again huh? LOL I love it!

I am jealous, we didnt get to dissect anything. All we had were plastic models and a really cool interactive CD that had cadavars on it. Anatomy was just a bunch of memorizing of anatomical structures. We didn't have anything "gross" in our class.
