Algebra STRESS and HELP!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I am taking an algebra course which was required by the CC I am attending for my prereqs to take A&P. It was required as I did not do so well in the placement exam in the Math portion. So... I am taking it over the summer so that I can start A&P I in the fall. I AM STRESSING OUT!!! BIG TIME! :( I am studying, practicing, etc. and still having a hard time. I have always struggled with Math so this is nothing new. My professor is pretty good but, I must say BUT the pace of this class is far quicker than I had expected! This is the first summer class I have taken. My question is this: what sites, books, etc. have any of you found to help you get through a class like this one? Our class operates on a system called mathxl.com -- all of our tests, and homework are on this system as well as practice tests, etc. Has anyone found anything that helped you to get through this course? I am willing to spend just about anything to help at this point as I have only *just passed* the two tests we have already had (in three days of school).

Any suggestions, advice, etc., would be much appreciated!!! Thank you!!!! :)

try purplemath.com also google college algebra help or something to that effect, you'll come up with a ton of sites.

Try going to Barnes and Noble and see what they have in terms of books etc. I have a couple that I used to refresh my memory on the math that "dumbed" it down enough for really anyone to understand.

Thank you for your response. I will check out that site as well as hitting the book store. Like I said, I will spend just about anything to pass this class even if it means private tutoring ! Do you know the names of the books you purchased that are "dumbed" down a bit for we laymen? If you happen to know them and would post them I would greatly appreciate it ! I need all the help I can get! I have not taken algebra since HS which was quite a few years ago for me... :( Thanks again. D

I don't know the names off hand. And my wonderful hubby got the "cleaning bug" and straightened out an area I keep some things. Well, of course those books were in there..and now he doesn't remember where he put them.

I just went to B&N and went into the aisle that has all the "help" books..study aids etc and just flipped through some and grabbed what seemed to be the easiest to understand. Can't really offer any other suggestion (until..IF..I find those books) than to just head to the book store and see if any of the books would be of use to you.

I always google things like that..I just put in college algebra help..try these (I didn't go into every site..so forgive me if they aren't what youre looking for)

THANK YOU!!! I just took a quick look at the fist site you posted and it seems good --- in plain English ! I really appreciate it! I will look at the rest and bookmark them. *If* you happen to come across the names of the books please post but thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to answer me! :)

I have always struggled in math as well. The only reason that I did so well was because the prof. would give us a practice test and I would memorize ALL the problems. Then when we were given the real test, I would write down the problems that I memorized and work out he new problem beside it. I had a private tutor and that helped as well. I am not good with teaching myself when it comes to math, so books wouldn't have done any good. The tutor was my friend's husband. However, this past semester I struggled with Chemistry because of the math. I came across a website call Wyzant.com and you can get a tutor for any subject. It is very pricey, but I passed chem and that's all that mattered!

I do most of my learning on youtube. Along with meeting with my teacher once a week, youtube was a huge part of me passing with an A.

Does your book come with a solutions manual? One may be available online somewhere even if it's not required for your class. I always found that if I could look at the worked-out solutions, I was able to grasp the material much better.

take a look at kahnacademy.org.

Thanks. I just looked up "algebra 1 help" on youtube and got a ton of hits. Was there a particular search you entered to find a good video(s) that helped you?

try this site http://www.algebasics.com/ Youtube is also a great source. Is there a particular part that you struggle with?

Thanks for your reply. I will check out that site. Right now I am struggling with things that look like this:

5 - 1/15x = 1/10x

I already emailed my professor w/ this type of problem as I have been doing pretty good these past few days w/ the fractions in algebra BUT this problem and ones like it throw me off when they start w/ a whole number.
