Advice about the BSN program

Hey guys,

Im 16 (Male) in high school right now in Canada

and im planning on getting my BSN after high school but im just curious on how it works in USA because in Canada you take grade 12 pre reqs and start your BSN the next year after you graduate high school if you get accepted. However since I am moving to do my grade 11 and 12 in Texas, USA. I was reading up on BSN program pre requistes in USA and I was seeing pre reqs you have to take in college so to complete your BSN does it take 5 years rather than 4 because of the one year of pre reqs?

Also if anyone has any tips that can give me an edge on getting in to any BSN programs that helped you I will greatly appreciate it because i still have 2 years of high school left thank you

Additionally i would like to add i have Dual citizenship of Canada and USA.

Hello there! I bet you'll enjoy schooling in Texas :) Most BSN programs here take 4 years, including pre reqs and clinicals. Usually, you get accepted into the college. Then, after about 2 years of completing the pre reqs, you apply to the college's nursing school and if accepted, complete the final 2 years. Then you earn your BSN upon graduation! My advice on getting accepted into your college's nursing program is to get As in your pre reqs. But some programs use things like interviews or experience as entrance requirements.

The way a BSN program works here is you have 2 years of prereqs and then you apply to the nursing program. If you are accepted you do 2 years in the program for a total of 4 years. Now some places will let you do some of the prereqs while you are still in high school. They may partner with a community college and allow you to start your senior year. I have a couple of girls in my psych class doing that and I know a girl starting this summer at community college to get her prereqs started and she will be a senior in the fall. When you get to Texas talk to a guidance counselor at your high school and see what is offered in your area.

A BSN is a total of 4 years of college. In the USA, at least in my area (Seattle), there are "running start" programs where you can attend a community college and take one or two classes while also being in high school. This gives you a "head start" on the prerequisites.

You're welcome! I've never schooled in Texas but they have some of the best universities in the South/mid/west region. But mainly I think you'll like *living* there because of all the fun towns you can visit outside of school haha

Oh yeah I forgot about doing college classes in high school! I did that my senior year as well (algebra and I think the other class was sociology? A loooong time ago haha) it was at a discounted rate and yhe professors came to the high school during school hours!

You can either do AP courses in high school or do dual enrollment with college while you're in high school. That way, you can knock out the basics like English, math, humanities, etc.
