ABSN chances??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I am currently a student at Mizzou studying Health Sciences and will be applying to ABSN programs for Summer/Fall 2017. Right now, I have about a 3.4 pre req GPA, I have Physiology and Nutrition left to take which I hope will boost my GPA. I am also CNA at a nursing home here in Columbia, MO. I am worried about my low GPA as well as class history. I had to retake the anatomy lab, I got a C- the first time, but an A with the retake. I also retook Stats.

I plan on applying to Mizzou, Rockhurst University, and MNU's ABSN programs which I have heard are all competitive programs.

Any advice on whether or not retaking classes will hurt my application even though I got A's the second time around? Any other application advice is much appreciated! Thank you!

That is totally dependent on the program. Some programs do not allow retakes or limit certain number of retakes. Some will calculate both grades (so your C and A, making it worth a B). Best bet is to contact each program and ask their policy and also ask what the last class admitting GPA was. Some schools also accept only pre-req GPA whereas others look at total GPA. Also ... remember just because you have a BS doesn't mean you must go to ABSN. ADN and tradition BSN programs are also an option. They may be less expensive and give a little more leeway as far as which courses will be calculated as GPA and may not be much of a time difference when it comes down to getting the RN. For me, even though I had a BA and MPH, I was accepted into tradition BSN, ABSN and an ADN program. I chose the ADN because it was least expensive, was more flexible (I have a toddler), and I would have had the same graduation date as the traditional BSN and only 2 months longer than the ABSN program. The ADN program is also very well respected in my area and ADNs are actively hired into acute care at excellent hospitals in my region.

Thanks for your help. I looked into it, the programs I am applying to allow retakes, but I'm curious if it is still looked down upon. Thank you for your input!

If they allow retakes then likely they don't "look down upon" it. Best thing to do would be to ask flat out. Simply say I plan on retaking xyz, however I am curious as to whether the admissions committee considers the fact that I retook the class or simply sees my gpa with the new grade?
