I would find someone else to ask about it. Find someone else in the class who seems to understand a lot. Sometimes just reading the chapters a couple of times can really clear things up. Just a suggestion that has worked for me in the past. Sometimes I just dont want to take up class time by asking questions, so reading the chapters a few times can sometimes do the trick.

    Quote from stpauligirl
Had my lecture today and I am terribly frustrated with my professor.....
He has blown off questions I had in the past and was short with me on more than one occasion, everytime I had a concern he found a way to get rid of me swiftly....I tried everything, meet him in his office during office hours, catch him before class etc...guaranteed it was the WRONG time. I don't have frequent unintelligent questions and I usually only try to clarify things that could easily be misunderstood and gotten wrong on upcoming tests. I had to ask him something 3 or 4 times so far. After he so swiftly "got rid" of me he then answered someone' else's question VERY politely later on during lecture, mind you it was a guy who asked a question about something that we needed to know for the last test.....I can only imagine if I had asked that question....he took his time and was nice about it. Why such difference????? Needless to say it bothers me a GREAT deal. I am his only A student in this class, the average was a 61 on the first test and he keeps adjusting the score by throwing out more questions as time goes on (I might end up with 100 if he continues, did a 94 on my own merrit) I am female and I am foreign and I come to the conclusion that this bothers him....I bother him. I think that he doesn't want me to do well in his class. He doesn't treat anyone else this way but the other foreigner in my class....a doctor from Iran. He is very short with that guy because his English is worse than mine.
I feel like I don't want to ask anything anymore, who needs to be shot down everytime? Well he has help in the "shooting down" department from one of our students who he spends a considerably amount of time discussing Genetics etc with....she is the snobby premed student who was incredibly snooty with me and told me that the Biochem class I took wasn't a Biochem class!!!!! I haven't spoken to her since and have no intend to do so in the future. I feel that my concern was very important since it could very well be confusing and could cause me to answer wrong on our upcoming test. I am not finished with it even though he cut me off swiftly.....I just want to know what he needs me to answer, I want to know the truth. I want to know facts, that's all.
There is too much discussion in class about TV shows, too many inside jokes and stuff with his A&P1 students who are now in this A&P2 class. Most of them didn't do well on this last test.
The pre-med student seems to have free reign and address all kinds of off topic stuff, he has patience for days with her......he is also the Health career advisor at our school so I can half way understand that people flock to him but please........enough is enough....if someone has a serious question that could mean life or death on his hellish lecture test he has NO patience??????
I intend to get my question answered and schedule one more last conference.....where I expect to be swiftly gotten rid off again.
I am a no-nonsense person and something might just start flying if I am not dealt with appropriately this time.
Sorry for venting, I hope you all have more success. It's just so very discouraging since I am an extremely hard worker, I am not stupid and even though I have a disability (not related to English being my second language) I make top grades in all of the prerequisites.
I figured it out......I am not a cowgirl from Oklahoma with a shotgun! (taecher said he is a cowboy from Oklahoma and likes guns)
I seriously don't have anything against cowgirls/boys from Oklahoma, I actually like guns and was an air rifle champ in my home country/town! I Volunteered at the boyscout camp here last summer at the BB gun range and also shoot bow and arrow ...... ...I actually like the country life.....grew up in the country myself and know what cowmanure smells like..... just on another continents.
My enthusiasm is just really low right now. But I will keep studying my brains out and get the BEST grades possible. Sometimes I think I should just stay home, adopt a child and not do this to myself any longer...... I really don't have to work, my husband makes enough money. I'd be better off playing with my children and be a homemaker, knit, crochet and bake nice things......maybe I am just getting too old for all this BS.
But then again I can't let a cowboy from Oklahoma stop me....and the premed student???? I won't be the first in line to be her patient....that's for sure.

I am not taking up class time, and he doesn't lecture from our book, he doesn't like our book I tried the book and it confuses things even more since they talk about things in there much differently....I ask after or whenever he says he is available....class time is taken up by goofing around and Bs so it wouldn't matter if I took another minute of it anyway. I guess I need to keep going to his competition....usually in the morning when I get there another A&P teacher is having Biostudy center duty....they started having teacher available for tutoring in our biostudy center because they have so many students fail these classes . I almost regret not having signed up for this particular teacher because he really seems to like helping me and he always says they need more students like me. The question I have can really only be answered by my teachaer since he is the one who will ask the question on the test. He is so quirky I may withdraw altogether and persue raising goats out in the country...too much extreme BS is just too much extreme BS...the stress is about to kill me I am a very serious student and study very hard, spend lots of time outside class and sacrifice family time on weekends( my husband is not home during the week)
Maybe he is on some drugs or something as a matter of fact I strongly believe he is, he's just got to be.....he kind of said something like that this morning and it scares me.....it wouldn't surprise me...remember he said his daughter has ADHD..well, he has it too in my opinion.
I feel like I am in some strange cult or something. The women just go ga ga over this guy, don't matter what the grade they get....I am soooooooooo unimpressed it's not funny! But then again I am just a dumb foreign woman, going thru menopause and what have you..... my school is soooo screwed up with their crappy biology department it's not funny! It's sickening!!!! I am ready to quit!

I didnt mean to make it sound like I was refering to you. I understood that you were trying to approach him outside of class. That is bad that he is so abrasive.
I was just telling you why I dont ask questions in class. I was then telling what I do and what helps me, but if he doesnt go by the book, that really wont help you. I dont know what to suggest next. Sounds like he is not so good of a teacher.

I am sorry that I was so frustrated....just like you are saying, he is not that good of a teacher. I will just keep trying my best to survive and find my answers elsewhere if he outright refuses to answer. 8 more weeks of this......I can do it!

Dont worry about that. We all get that way from time to time.

In a week from tomorrow we will have our 2nd lecture test...unless he changes his mind. So this week it's study study study for it. Our next labtest is in about 2 weeks and we will start learning the bloodvessels on the fetal pig tomorrow. I am already doing well with memorizing the arteries and veins on the pictures, so I am not so anxious about the lab...but lecture OMG sooooo much informatioin and then there will be his questions. I will be ok.

Hang in there! Don't let him get you down. We are here if you want to bouce around ideas. I'm studying for my lab midterm which is this week. It will cover endocrine, heart, blood, blood vessels and respiratory. So, I'm trying to memorize all the veins and arteries, their locations and areas supplied now.

Good luck with that....do you have a list of arteries and veins or is it a big guessing game...at least our teacher gave us a list of the bloodvessels we need to know and so far has stuck to not asking anything else but what he lists. For our upcoming bloodvessel lab test he uses the pics in our textbook which he likes for once, he doesn't like our book for all other things so far. What I did is I made copies of those pictures and blanked out all the names and only indicate the ones that I need to remember. So by writing over and over I'll start remembering how to spell and where these babies are located. Luckily I have a color printer which makes things easier to recognize.
Here we go again tomorrow....as I am studying and going over my taped lecture I found that I will have to ask my teacher a question about something where he expects us to know the order of events on the test, he said we needed to know it for the test in class on Friday. He was not clear about step 2 and 3, I don't know which one comes first.....the book is not given me my answer either...so here we go again, I have to ask him but I expect him to blow me off once again. I'll let you guys know how it went
    Good luck with studying.

Nope, no list. For our exams, we are just told to know everything about everything that is in bold or italics for the lab sections that we covered. So, basically, I have to know them all.

It's a bummer, because for A&P II, we had lists for our midterm and final. And I know that they had them for the last A&P II class. I'm not sure why they did away with them for our class. Some student must have made a fuss about them. I have no idea why -- it just makes our life harder to NOT have a list. *sigh*

What is it that you have questions about the steps on? I hope you find your answers!

I GOT MY QUESTION ANSWERED....and imagine this on a rainy Monday morning . He was very nice and polite about it...wonder what happened, even the premed student was nice today and we all had a great time in lab disecting that little piggy.
Wow what an experience that was, something that will stay with me forever.
We worked on one pig as groups of 4 and it really left an impression on me. We named ours....one girl became somewhat upset and had a hard time with the smell, surprisingly it didn't bother me. One girl in my group got all antsy when I started the cutting....she drove me crazy and I handed it over to her, she then handed it over to the doc who was in our group...he did a great job.
She didn't trust me but I would have done ok....Everyone should get a turn to cut anyway and the 4th person never wanted to cut anything. I stopped because I didn't want her freaking out t me as she became increasingly more and more nervous as I cut along. But it's ok, I learned enough, as long as I will be able to name the bloodvessels and other stuff.
Part of me should have told her to SHUT UP! So I am a littke mad at myself of letting her bully me out of it.
We will keep working on the pig for 2 more weeks and then have our labtest.

Just study hard and do your best, you will be ok.

I'm glad that you had a good experience with him! Whatever it was, I'm glad he finally was nice

I think there are people like that in every lab group. I just try to remember them, so I don't get them next time!

Unfortunately she sits next to me during lecture and our teacher put us in groups, we can't choose who we want to work with. She has already missed 2 lectures and one lab, she hasn't taken the first lecture test and will drop that one. Let's put it this way...she isn't going to walk out of there with an A. She is usually not focused and seems to have outside problems with family etc. she gets lost during lecture, interrupts me because she can't keep up with note taking etc. at least this is not detrimental to me since I have a recorder. She was in my micro class and it was the same thing she didnt sit near me then. I'll survive, I just need to keep my cool and not get upset about her. I can already see it...our teacher said that the veins on our pig weren't that good and we need to cut ours out so that our arteries (which are very nice) are more visible....we will have several pigs showing only the best examples of veins and arteries that he will use for our test. well when it was time for that yesterday everyone was in a hurry to leave, so I reminded them that the veins will be cut on Wednesday....I see myself doing it since they just seem to want to do the "Fun" part and not the "serious" work. I'll take the veins out first thing if they dont get going....It's like a circus and can get frustrating for the truly serious students. I'll keep demonstrating that I am serious....stick to what is important and follow the teachers directions and keep persisting if I need to have my questions answered. I think that's the kind of attitude they are looking for to be a

Get this, the girl that made a fuss about me potentially cutting the pig the wrong way didn't show for lab today!!!!!!!! She keeps skipping lectures and labs!!!! Today we were supposed to continue working on our piggy but watched slides instead, so next Monday we will continue instead.
So far I think I am doing really well in lab....the problem and difficulty lies in the lecture part. We won't have our lecture test this coming Monday (thank God for that) but the following Friday with the lab right after that particular weekend.
Too many people aren't doing too well with the prerequisites at our school so from now on there will be various counselors and speakers in our Biospot study center promoting other programs. I am tired of hearing of how hard it is to get into nursing school and according to our teacher it has become much harder these last 3 years!!!!! Once again he said today that we need AT LEAST a 3.5 if we want to stand a chance!!!!! Including this one I have two more classes to go which won't be science classes.
On the positive side, I think I have found a really nice friend in my class. We stayed after class and went to the lab studying. We studied once before together. Yippee I may have found a great study buddy!!!!
I just got to hang in there.....and I hope so will everyone else
