A&P online?!?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I plan on taking Anatomy and Physiology this summer to begin my journey to nursing school. I am very concerned however, because it looks as if my only option due to my work schedule is to take Anatomy and Physiology online. I will be taking it at Cayuga Community College in NY. This is actually the school that I hope to get into for the nursing program as well. The class is 4 credits with an interactive lab online. It does not show up on a transcript as an online class.

Does anyone have experience taking this class online? I'd really rather take it in person but it isn't possible at this time. Id love feed back from anyone who has taken it online. Did they find it to be much harder? How did your online lab work? Any feed back is appreciated.

Caution: many programs I've seen require the lab be in person, so you may be closing off some options.

I am taking it online right now and it is alot harder than going to class because you are teaching yourself. If you have good study habits and put in the time you can do well in this class. Organization and studying is the key.

I did both A&P I and II online. It was tough going, because you are entirely self-led (obviously) and I missed the "real-time" discussions and instant answers from the tutor. Having said that, it allowed me to work at my own pace (within reason, still have to get work turned-in on time) and continue working. So, all things considered, I was happy with my choice.

BTW - my online class was not with your specific college. But we also had online lab work etc - it used a CD that came with the textbook, and also I had to take a mid-and final in-person exam.

Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to go for it

I've taken A&P 1 and 2 online and I love it. You HAVE to be self-motivated and learn it on your own, but there are a lot of tools out there. YouTube was a great help. There are full A&P lectures on there. And the lab portion is just memorization. Lots and lots and lots of memorization lol.

I took mine through a community college as a pre-nursing major. All of the nursing programs in my area accept both lecture and lab web courses, but it would be worth it to confirm with the schools in your area.

Where I am at here in TX I was able to take A&P1 on campus both lab and lecture. As of now I am not sure if it is anywhere else, but the college I was enrolled in has begun to change there system and many of those science based classes are either completely online or hyrbid, which means partially online and on campus. It all depends on how they administer it or arrange the course work. For A&P 2 I had no other choice, but to take hyrid some labs where on campus and exams sometimes they were online of course it will be a little more difficult on how fast you receieve feedback from your instructor due to the timing etc. Of course you will also be self teaching yourself and may have access to contact peers through the course site. Many times you can make a study group you can either do it through messaging exchange numbers and keep contact. Exchanging information I feel is helpful because most times we dont cover many things or either dont understand them, but by exhanging informatiom you get to see the perception of others and it may simplify the information for you and add additional information. Most of the work should be self explanatory more said it is managable I was scared at first because I was like OH MY GOD there is so much information. Just take it a day at a time if you do not have another option just be sure to have your resources handy and know what to expect. Personally I would not take a course such as that one for the summer as it will be crucial information that will supplement your future career and studies it will be more that you will need to know and memorize other than cram and just take the class for the grade. The reason I mention this is because I am in the process of applying to nursing school and councelors explain their dissapoint on how students just sit through classes for a grade. Than later on their studies they struggle. Due to lack or insufficient foundation on the material whatever you are learning now will be essential throughout your curriculum of studies. Also, one of my proffesors once adviced me to always take my time and never rush through important courses that I would need in my career because it will always be better to understand and know the material other than to rush through and take such load of work. I wish you the best of luck carefully think of it because you do now want to have a W or F or I on yoir transcript only you know you and your study habits. Please do not take this as negative feedback I wish I would of had someone to advice me, but its easy for others to shut you out. This is not an easy career it is extemely competetive and is better to be aware at the moment then down along closer to the actual challenge.

I am taking A&P 1 online right now. It's one of the prerequisites for the accelerated BSN program that I'm hoping to apply to this summer. I chose this option, because I found it to be easier with a full time job. I enjoy the flexibility of completing assignments when I can. We're given a weekly deadline, so on days when my schedule is packed, I know I can complete the assignments on another day prior to the deadline. It's also helpful that my professor happens to be very accessible via phone and emails. You do have to be motivated to stay on top of assignments and not be afraid to ask questions. The virtual labs are pretty cool, but I do miss the having the opportunity to do them in an actual lab. However, I think you'll enjoy the experience! :)

I've taken both A&P1 and A&P2 online due to my work schedule (I work 12 hour nights). My adviser is a sneaky one and was sure to mention that while some schools won't accept online science classes, that they have no way of knowing if a class was taken online or not. However, the school I'm looking into to get my BSN does accept online classes. I have really enjoyed online A&P. My teacher has made all sorts of resources available to us. She has her recorded lectures online along with the matching powerpoints that we can access over and over again, she has links to other helpful sites and videos (she actually links directly to Crash Course videos on YouTube), and has an online copy of her textbook available. For our lab practicals she had it set up in the form of a multiple choice/fill-in-the-blank computer test and would have photos of whatever we were covering at that moment. For example, she would have a photo of a tissue sample and we would have to say if it was simple squamous, simple cuboidal, stratified columnar, etc...

I am currently taking all of my nursing prerequisites online and I am a huge fan of this method. I work full-time as an ER tech at the hospital and the online classes fit best into my schedule. This semester I am taking A + P I online and it has gone very well. However, my college requires onsite attendance for the lab portion. I really enjoy the in-person labs, but I think an online interactive lab could easily work too. My best advice for online classes is to make sure you know yourself and your learning style. Are you able to be self-motivated and an independent learner? If so, then online sounds like a great option. Best of luck as you work and take classes. It can be tough sometimes :)

A friend of mine took A&P I and II at Cayuga and then went on to Crouse. The experience was great. It was difficult - like all A&P! - but it worked well with her schedule and she felt well-prepared. Plus, if you plan to go to Cayuga's nursing program, it should be a seamless transition. Good luck!
