Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

well, it's about time to start this thread, i think!! let's get our bearings and see who all is in the same boat in january!

i finish up the first half of a&p with a comprehensive exam on december 13th and then it's right into the physiology portion of the course. we actually are starting special senses this week and next but will only get the first chapter done.

so .... who else is in? when did you take a&p i and how is your course set up? do you have the prof you want and are you looking forward to it?

i will include the sites from the a&p i thread that might be helpful! i will add/subtract as i get a chance to look through them a bit more or if anyone else suggests some good sites.

Well my first day was Monday. We had our first quiz last night and I am already off to a bad start because I did horrible on the quiz. I made it through A&P ! with a B+ but I am really worried with this second half. I don't feel that I understand like some of the other students. Why doesnt the information click in my brain when my teacher is lecturing?? I am already confused and we are only on talking about blood. My teacher was explaining all the different blood types and I was understanding a little bit then I just got lost.I want to be able to unerstand the information becasue I know it is important for Nursing school. Even though I have received all A and B's in my classes I am extremely worried about this class. Well I guess I will have to admit that I am the type of student that has to work much harder than some. Well that was how my first day went and I hope it gets better.

I so can relate. I took A&P I back in 2000 and here I am trying to take II. My instructor is great but it just isn't clicking with me. I am hoping that it will click now that I can spend some time on it. My classes are on Mon and Wed and since we are out of school on Mon...that gives me a little less than a week to learn this chapter and get back in the groove of things. We are currently working on the Endocrine System. Good luck to you.

I'm sorry to hear about ur day. I dont think AP comes easy to most people. For me I have to read the chapter take notes on it then transfer the chapter notes and class notes on to index cards and constantly test and retest myself. Its not easy but its worth it in the end. Keep working hard and u'll be alright.

 I am also taking A&P II this semester :) Good luck everyone!! The links posted are awesome!!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to add a couple of sites to Kayel's already awesome list. Hope that everyone is doing well.

I am happy to hear that I am not the only person like that. I question my abilility to learn when I see others just catching on from listening and how well they understand from lecture. While I am sitting there lost:uhoh3: and feeling like Ok "what is wrong with me???" Well this weekend since we do not have class I will devote my time to really trying to read the chapter and comprehend it not just memorize my note cards because that is not working for me. Good luck to you too.

Sorry to hear your day wasn't so great. I felt the same way my first few days back. It was as if my brain had turned to mush over the break or soemthing. It took me the first week to settle back into the groove. Are you recording lectures so you can listen to the confusing parts again later if you need to? I usually don't get it the first time through either, so that helps me a lot, as well as note taking, of course. I have to work really hard for my grades too, so I understand where you're coming from.

We had our first Lab practical today on endocrine and blood and although it was a bit more gnarly than the AP1 labs, I think I did pretty well.

We had things like a picture of a hypothalamus histo slide with an arrow pointing to it, but with questions like "What gland is controlled by the cells released from this?" And then there were easy ones like a models of testes

and ovaries where you i.d. it and then tell what hormone is produced there. And a lot of questions about how certain glands were controlled...chemically, neurally ot hormonally. The blood stuff was easiest.

I'm trying a new tack this quarter. Lots of flashcards, as usual, but I'm only using the text as a reference book and not as my "bible"...for that I'm using my profs lecture notes and lab manual. I'm using the text for tables, illustrations and definitions that aren't clear from lecture and of course, good websites are always helpful. So far, it seems to be working and I don't feel as bogged down. Last quarter I practically rewrote the book, but I got a great grade. After I get my grades from this lab and my next Tuesday's lecture test I'll let everyone know if my new method is smart or completely stupid! ;)

Trust me you are not the only one feeling this way.Not only do I not retain the info immediatrly, I write it,record it,draw it,and spend many many hours studying it!The blood type was confusing for me also. I decided to make a chart on a poster AB ABO and etc then I read up on it using my AP book after that I compared it with the lab manual. Guess what it worked. Continue giving it your all.You managed in AP 1, you'll manage in AP 2. Keep me posted .

Since people are having some trouble with blood, I uploaded the powerpoint I made that helpped me learn. I litterally went through all of my teachers notes/handouts/quizes and made myself one BIG quiz that I went through at least once daily. There is a lot on ABO and Rh factors. So if anyone is interested check it out.

These are the links my A&P teacher has given us for the class. Most of them look good, and different from the list posted here!

Virtual Anatomy Lab http://www.sunyniagara.cc.ny.us/val/valindex.html

From Niagara Community College. Searchable, user friendly site. Includes some cat dissection views. Great resources, links for each body system addressed.

LUMEN Gross Anatomy Site http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/MedEd/grossanatomy/learnem/learnit.htm

HistoWeb http://www.kumc.edu/instruction/medicine/anatomy/histoweb/

From the University of Kansas. Outstanding for learning tissue types and subtypes.

LUMEN Histology Site http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/MedEd/Histo/frames/histo_frames.html

Fantasic resource for learning tissue types, subtypes, and locations.

Neuroscience for Kids - Cranial Nerves http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/cranial.html

from Washington University of St. Louis. Great diagrams and study guide for learning the 12 pairs of cranial nerves.

Physiology Animations http://www.uh.edu/sibs/tutorial/ap2.htm#urinary

Some are interactive; from many body systems and processes covered in this class; sponsored by University of Texas at Houston

Blood Cell Histology http://www.unomaha.edu/hpa/blood.html

From the University of Omaha, Nebraska - identification, information about formed elements of blood. Be sure to use numbers presented in the text as the "authority" for CBC & differential counts.

Cardiac Cycle - Mechanical Activity and Blood Flow http://www.thinkquest.org/library/websitena.html?C003758

OUTSTANDING resource for anatomy and physiology related to the cardiac cycle. I do not recommend viewing this with a dial-up connection, there are many large files and animations to run.

HyperHeart 2 - from the University of Utah Medical School Library http://medlib.med.utah.edu/kw/pharm/HyperHeart2.htm

Requires shockwave software download. Be sure to stop the animation and go frame by frame for a more detailed explanation of events. This is a wonderful tool for "putting it all together" as it pertains to the cardiac cycle.

Nervous System from UW-LaCrosse http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/aplab/Table_of_Contents/Lab_07/lab_07.html

Offers diagrams of brain and other nervous system models. Excellent tutorial and pictures of sheep brains

Blood Types Tutorial http://www.biology.arizona.edu/human_bio/problem_sets/blood_types/Intro.html

Fromt the University of Arizona. Great tutorial, review of blood typing and genetics.

Are You My Blood Type? Game http://www.givelife2.org/games/matchgame.asp

From the American Red Cross. Very catchy game to review blood donation rules. Be sure to read the directions before you begin!

Thanks everyone. Like many said before this website is a blessing. It is so nice to be able to communicate with people going through the same situation. I am also taking Pharmocology it is a requirement before you get into the program. It is really giving me a taste as to what nursing school will actually be like as far as critical thinking with different questions regarding patients. Just started but seems this class will also be a lot of work. I will keep trying my best. Thanks again

Thank you everyone for all the great links!

I had my second lab session yesterday. Wow. There seems like so much to learn to the cardiovascular system. I have to know 20 parts of the human heart, 10 of the sheep's, and the pathways the arteries and veings travel (two different sets of pathways). Not to mention the stuff about the endocrine system.
