Per Diem positions, Do they help or hurt chances of getting in?


I'm in the process of applying to 4 of the 5 schools in Michigan for the nurse anesthesia program. I have everything ready and I'm currently writing my goal statements/biography for them.
I have 3.5 years experience in a neuro ICU, but I have worked per diem/agency in several local hospitals in their ICUs (generally medical ICU). If I mention this in my letters, and even in my interview (if I get invited), will this help or hurt my cause? I have help my fulltime position in the neuro ICU the whole time.

I don't think it will. I have worked in the ICU float pool the last 8 months, but just got a job full time in surgical-trauma because I was worried about that too. But since you have full worked full time in the nuero ICU while picking up those other random shifts, I think you'll be more than fine. I also work agency about 2 days a month and only go to tele floors just bc that's where they usually have needs, but I'm going to keep that on my resume when I apply. I'm not going to go into detail about it like I will my full time job, but I'll def. add it on there. Hope this helps.

I can't speak for all the schools out there, but I too was a neuro ICU nurse who had worked as a traveler & in prn positions prior to applying. In fact, when I was accepted I'd been working prn in a Level I trauma center TICU. The main thing they looked for in my interviews was the clinical experience I had such as vents, gtts, etc. They loved the fact I'd worked in several Level I & II trauma centers as a prn nurse. I was accepted to both programs I applied to & am starting class in 1 week. Also, a big bonus for me was not only having my CCRN but also my CNRN. As a neuro nurse you should consider this certification. :hngon:

I was a neuro ICU nurse and did per diem on the side.I put all on my CV. Had 4 years ICU exp w/ no certifications. I was asked in my interview why no CCRN. Explained too busy trying to get prereqs for CRNA. Got in & am now a very happy CRNA. I really think alot of getting in relies on your interview. Be yourself. Confident & look 'em in the eye.

You're so right about the interview. I know people with fantastic CV's who don't interview well & didn't get accepted.

I would also consider asking the schools. I emailed a couple directors who said they frown upon agency/per diem status even if the same amount of hours are worked.
