Honors in the major?

My school is really pushing for me to do honors in the major. Essentially it's a research paper presented in front of a panel. They insist it is pivotal for anyone with any hopes of attending grad school. I loathe researching with a passion; I would really hate to do more than necessary. I was wondering if you all thought it was really necessary to do this honors option, or if it is superfluous.

I will be graduating with a 3.955

Thanks for the input,

-Leo
