Feeling hopeless about future after only 6 weeks into Nursing school

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hey guys, I just started Nursing school about 6 weeks ago and my dream is to be a CRNA one day. I came from a community college where I did my pre-reqs (4.0 GPA) and now six weeks into the program and I'm hovering around a B+ GPA. I feel like I work so hard for these exams but end up doing really bad and this is concerning me for my future because if my GPA stays as it is, I will never get into a CRNA program. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thank You for the encouragement !

I do not mean this in a condescending way but that makes me feel a lot better. Would you mind telling me how along ago was this? Thank You.

3 weeks ago :) Best of luck to you

Lol welcome to nursing.

I know a lot of CRNA students with 3.3-3.4ish GPAs. Don't be obsessive. Nursing still doesn't know how to grade "critical thinking" objectively so they just give everyone bad grades and move on. It is what it is. Do as best you can, and like Sherriblu said, don't give up! You've got a long road ahead.

thank you ! I will not give up, this has been my dream since high school and everyday is bringing me close to the realization of this dream.

My advice is to stop thinking so much about becoming a CRNA, and start thinking about becoming a great ICU nurse. I have been accepted into two different CRNA programs and throughout nursing school, CRNA was always my goal and provided my motivation for everything. When I got into ICU, I was very surprised to learn how stressful it was and wondered what in the heck I got myself into. I seriously wanted to get out of nursing at times. It has been a rough 14 months, but I start CRNA school in August. If I could start nursing school all over again, being a great ICU nurse would have been my focus. I have heard many times that students that get in nursing to become CRNA's never make it to CRNA school, but the students that have a passion for taking care of sick patients do. Best of luck and I'm certainly not trying to discourage, just provide advice!

^ Excellently written. One step at a time. Don't shoot for CRNA if you can't see yourself being an ICU nurse for eternity.

Yes! I love this! I was an ER nurse and an ICU nurse before I even thought about going to CRNA school. I have several classmates who started out with CRNA as a goal. But, something you will learn early in CRNA school is to only look at the road in front of you. Sometimes you just have to take it one goal at a time. If you focus on being an excellent nursing student, then being an excellent ICU nurse, you will shine when it comes to interviews! Good luck!

I completely disagree with this statement. I couldn't see myself being an ICU nurse for another year much less an eternity. I know a few CRNAs and SRNAs that hated working in the ICU and loves anesthesia. Anesthesia administration is not ICU nursing. I suppose that it could be risky to enter nursing only to become a CRNA, but honestly, if the person wants it badly enough, it's not that difficult.

I have the same goal as you and had the same problem as you are having going into nursing school. 4.0 in community college and got my first B in my first semester of nursing school. I ended up getting 2 B's in nursing school and I will graduate Summa Cum Laude in a few weeks. The first semester is rough. Keep working hard, you will get through it.

The associates program of nursing is always very difficult. I went through the same thing. Got B's and C's and I was happy about it. What really matters when it comes to your GPA when applying to CRNA is the reputation of that community college in the community, as far as the strength of their nurses is concerned. If your GPA is mediocre, but you went to a well-regarded nursing school with a positive reputation, the committee can see that. Do your best and give everything you happen. Good things tend to come to those types of people.

Have you actually shadowed a CRNA, because actually the basics are quite similar. If you really do hate being an ICU nurse, I would question the choice to be a CRNA because they aren't the same, but there are a lot of similarities.
