CRNA? At my age?

Updated Apr 29, 2009 at 07:07 AM by NRSKarenRN

I am very interested in becoming a CRNA. I have been out of school 20+ years with my BSN. My GPA was a little above 3. I have worked in ICU, NICU, CVICU, and PACU. Have ACLS, PALS, CCRN. I have shadowed a CRNA and know this is what I want to do! I'm luckily at a point in my life where my kids don't need me as much and financially I think we can manage without my salary while I would be in school. I am interested in other suggestions to improve my picture before applying. I am getting ready to take the GRE or MAT - have been studying so hopefully will have a decent score. I know some schools want chemistry within 5 years - the program at Florida Hospital College does not mention this - does anyone know anything about that program?

Hi,
I don't know anything about that particular program. But I started my NA program short of 30 yrs post high school graduation. If you want to do it, go for it.
Best wishes.

It's been 20+ years since I graduated from college. How long has it been since you got your BSN?

Hi,
I graduated from my basic nursing education (diploma) in 87. After seeking more education, I did my BSN completion 94-96. Then in 2006, I started NA school, but had to withdraw to secondary grades. I have completed my first year of nurse anesthesia school. Next February, I will be 50. I am glad that I made the decision to go back. My graduation will be August 2010. Best of luck.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement. I am trying to get my paperwork, etc together. Just wondering if they will want more recent education.

It would probably be it good idea to review chemistry,A/P, Physics, and Statistics. Also some schools will recommend what other courses might be helpful. I encountered trouble with physiology at the cellular level.
Best of Luck.

Many or most will want your hard sciences (A&P, chemistry, biochemistry, etc.) to be within the last 5 or 10 yrs. Contact the schools you are thinking of applying to to find out their specific requirements.

For what it's worth, I'm an older SRNA but a newcomer to nursing. You can do this if it's in your heart. I've spent the last 6 years doing prereqs, accelerated BSN, critical care and now anesthesia school. I just wish I had discovered this career option years ago.
