I am currently a nursing student at Maryville University in Missouri and have the intent to become a nurse anesthetist. I fell in love with the profession when I was hospitalized for a gunshot wound a few years back- not because I was mixed up in some dangerous lifestyle; a guy dropped his gun while we were in church and I was hit. I was in the hospital for twenty days and on day 12 I went in for major surgery- liver resection. I remember the doctors visiting for a few minutes but it was the nurse anesthetist who, after completing her assessments, stayed with me until I was asleep, holding my hand. She was also the person I first saw when I woke up. Anyway, I have a purpose for this thread. I meant to ask what makes a competitive applicant? I understand the basic requirements as I have read admission requirements for several schools and understand the requirement for ICU experience. I have a degree in Physics with an emphasis in Medical physics, will this degree make me more competitive than others with the same clinical experience or should I complete a degree in something such as biochemistry? Thank you for your time and consideration.

  4. A degree in medical physics will be a positive on your application. Two to four years experience in a high acuity ICU, GPA-especially in your sciences, a sense that you will work hard and stick with the anesthesia program will also be important.
