I believe they usually start with a diuretic.

hmm.. well if a diuretic wasn't an option and i was going to give an antihypertensive medication, what is usually prescribed?

First line treatment for hypertension is always lifestyle modification. Weight reduction, DASH diet, sodium reduction <2.4/Gm/D, physical activity and alcohol moderation could reduce SBP by 21-55 mmHg.

If lifestyle modification fails, diuretics are usually the starting meds. Keep in mind that 2/3 of hypertension pts. need more than one medication to control thier hypertension.

Hydrochlorothiazide diuretic -> add beta blocker or ACEI.

as above, start with lifestyle modifications, then add a diuretic (HCTZ 25mg QD), then add an ACEI or a beta blocker.
