Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

Hi all,

Hope everyone has finished their applications and sent in their supplymental materials for early decision. I think everyone is nervous about it and it is going be a long one and half month of waiting. Does anyone know that when we will be notified for interviews? I saw the post from last year. JH interviewed all applicants who applied to their master programs, is that true? Maybe I read it wrong or remember it wrong.

I have joined two online chats. The staffs said they usually got about 600 to 800 applicants per year (summer and fall entries together). My grades are definitely not competitive comparing to most people. I have been working in medical research for 3 plus years (one article to be published soon) and one year of public health health worker experience in clinic. Hopefully, those experience would help me.

Wish everyone the best luck

Hey cnd29 and ALXiong!

I totally wanted to apply to that track because I think I may want to be a midwife but I didn't want to commit because my experience might totally change that.

I also heard that every applicant to the master's program will be interviewed. It can be over the phone or in person.

Both of you guys sound like competitive applicants! Amazing experience! I really hope I get to attend a college surrounded by people like you.

I'm so glad other applicants started to come out. I mean threads from other years have gotten a high volume of responses! I was wondering where all of you were...

Anyway, I'm wishing all of us luck. I really like reading through those threads and seeing so many of the people get accepted. :D

I have been following this thread since its creation but, for some reason, have had difficulty registering/logging in. I got it now! I have enjoyed reading the previous posts from 2011 because they had a larger number of participants and they seemed to be eager posters! I created a thread specifically for the midwifery program but did not have any responses. Glad to hear we are all in the same boat, makes it a little easier to get by.

Every applicant into the MSN program gets an interview? I am really hoping to get the opportunity. I have never been to the Hopkins campus/Baltimore and would love an excuse to check it out. I also think getting the chance to speak with admission representatives in person could help swing the vote.

I have also done some preliminary searching on housing availability and came across the new graduate student building. Does anyone know anything more about this/heard at the open house about its availability to nursing students?

To speak on the financial strain of attending JHU, I am trying not to think about it. Like someone else said in a previous post - I would value the chance to attend a world-class university like Hopkins. While there are other schools out there (though only a little over a dozen with accredited midwifery programs), I firmed believe that the JHU philsophy of research, underserved community engagement and academic challenge fits with my ultimate goals. I currently attend a private and very competitive university and enjoy (yet also completely despise sometimes!) the challenge. My university has the "entitled, lucky-to-be-here" persona as well which I really hate, but I think will be hard to avoid when dealing with such intense and highly known schools.

Overall, just getting super pumped about hearing back (any type of contact would be amazing!) from JHU.

Thinking about biding my time this weekend watching some festive movie (maybe Nightmare Before Christmas??) and some baking. Made pumpkin bread last night which was a sweet transition to the cold mornings we have had in Upstate/Central NY!

Yay I love the Fall season! I heard NY got a lot of snow :s

I'm totally with you, cnd29, on believing in their philosophy. I mean seriously compared to the other school I'm applying to, JHU has been extremely friendly and helpful. I really really like that!

Also that new building is supposed to house the nursing and medical students of JHU. I found that out at the open house. I would love to be in an atmosphere like that-living around people just as driven as you, studying what you are studying.

I have a question though. When you guys get emails from JHU do you also get an email from an individual as well?

I got two emails from JHU today - one from the general School of Nursing and one from an individual restating the same message.

I called the SON admissions office and the woman (who was AMAZINGLY friendly and super kind) said that all individuals applying to the MSN component have the opportunity to interview. The office needs to verify that all the application materials are submitted, and I assume that the application fee is cleared, before interviews can be scheduled. Once your full application is received, one of the admissions representatives will send you an email that says you can make an appointment for an interview (either in person or over the phone).

Definitely planning on doing the in-person interview and getting the chance to explore campus/Baltimore. Getting super anxious about getting the second email. Ahhhhh!

Just found this thread! GAH! I guess it was staring at me in the face. I too am applying to JHU for their BSN/MSN program for summer 2012 entry - hopefully to obtain a degree as a Family NP. I chose not to do early decision as my app would not have been finished so will be submitting hopefully within in the next week.

Just to clarify, you can submit the essays via email? It does not have to be a part of their "one envelope" policy? That would be helpful so I can send my transcripts ahead of time and get a few extra days to tweak the essay.

Good luck to everyone who has already applied!!!

Welcome dedicatedone!

Yes I am 100% sure you can submit it by email. I just submitted my resume, three essays, and prerequisite form to them by email. The email address you can send it to is [email protected].

I remember inquiring about this specifically because there was contradicting information on the website but I was told that email is completely fine. I even asked about what format we should save it in but they said if there was a problem with anything they would email us back.

Thanks for answering my question cnd29! I'm totally worried about the other email too. I just want everything to go as smoothly as possible.

I know what you mean with the application not being ready. I really did want to do early decision though and find out sooner and also express my strong interest in their school! I did my best on the essays and I'm hoping it will warrant an acceptance.

Wow guys, how am I going to wait a month and a half?!? I'm already biting my nails!

Glad to see more and more posts. I am applying to their fall entry because the timing is better for me. I still need to take a class during summer for pre-req.

MarwaT: you are not the one who is biting nails! I know it is going to be the longest one and half month of my life. Let's hope for the best!

Thinking about biding my time this weekend watching some festive movie (maybe Nightmare Before Christmas??) and some baking. Made pumpkin bread last night which was a sweet transition to the cold mornings we have had in Upstate/Central NY!

Yes! Trader Joes Pumpkin Bread mix is soooooo good. I'm too lazy to make from scratch yet. Come holiday season, I will be baking much more :) Halloween was fun (I didn't dress up, but my dog was a nurse!). I'm ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

So....I just received an email confirming that my application is complete and will be in review by the Admissions Committee @_@

Exciting but very nerve wracking.

I applied for the ABSN only. So no interview for me. However, good luck to those who applied for the masters as well!

Hey guys,

It's nice to see a thread for JHU. I submitted my online application on 9/28/11 and sent in my supplemental materials on 10/26/11. I just received an email today that the application is complete and that I can call to schedule an interview. I am applying for the ABSN/MSN program to start in summer 2012. I still have a few prereqs (Microbiology/Nutrition/Life-Span Psych) to complete this Winter/Spring, so hopefully I can finish those up. I'm nervous, but I have been on interviews for grad school before, so this isn't anything new. Good luck to everyone applying!

Hey everyone! Late to the posts but I applied early decision as well. I'm a little nervous if they received all my material..did they say they would contact us if things were missing, or are we responsible for following up? I know every school is a little different. I'm so anxious during this wait! Does anyone know if you don't get accepted early, if you get bumped into the regular applicant pool?
