Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

I'm not applying for summer but do plan to apply for Fall. I'm lucky in that I have saved up the money for tuition as I am a career changer. I don't want to leave Maryland so don't plan to apply to any schools that would require me to move. The idea of commuting to Baltimore makes me a bit nervous. I live about an hour away by car. I've figured out a few options like parking at BWI and taking the light rail? The Marc also seems like a possibility.

The public health aspect of JHU really attracts me. I would really like to work in a community with a need for adequate healthcare. Not to say that UMD wouldn't also have similar opportunities. I also plan to apply there as well and also possibly George Washington. Both of those seem more suburban to me though. (GWU is in NOVA vs DC)

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Hi everyone,

I am applying for the Accelerated BSN/MSN. I graduated from undergrad in May and I am currently working as a teacher for kids with autism. I LOVE the public health aspect of JHU and I want to work in medically underserved communities so I think Baltimore would be a great fit. However, the cost of JHU is a little concerning.

Hello! I'm also applying for the summer 2012 program early decision. Apps are due very soon. I'm sooooo close to finishing mine.

MarwaT, thanks for all the great info. I visited JHU the day before the open house. I had to go to NYC for the weekend.

Baltimore was SO different from Los Angeles (where I am from and am currently located). But I loved the small town feel. The nursing school and administrative staff were extremely helpful and kind.

Anyway, best of luck to all of you. The waiting will be VERY nerve racking but oh well...just hope for the best?

Finally! Other signs of life haha

Let's hope for the best. I'm also close to finishing but my essays are making me really nervous. You know how sometimes you are amazing at something but when you get nervous you totally can't do it anymore? WELL I'm really struggling on the essays. I've written maybe about 7 different drafts with totally different life experiences. I seriously need to get over my nerves otherwise I will miss the early decision deadline!

Speaking of the cost, I am not even concerned about that now. I would just love to have the option of going to such a great school. The public health portion is beyond amazing you guys. I feel like if I attended there I would already know what I want to register for.

The area where the nursing school was seemed pretty nice. It was like a quieter part of the city. Reminded me of some towns in NYC (where I grew up).

GWU is in Leesburg. It's definitely a brand new campus. I think you would be the third graduating class.

An hour away is totally an okay commute if you can read on the train ride home. I get motion sickness :uhoh3:

I know what you mean about missing the early decision deadline. I'm STILL working on my essays @_@. I have a lab quiz on wednesday, am volunteering at the hospital for most of Halloween day, and huge midterm the next day.

I want to turn in my papers in my mail, not email...except for the recommendation forms. That means, I should probably be done with everything by Wednesday to be safe. Gahhhh...stress.

MarwaT, you're from NYC? My "dream" job is at either Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or NYP!

Anyway, back to the essays here i gooooooo~

Wow that is an intense schedule. Unfortunately I'm working pretty much every day until November 1st too. I basically need to have final polished drafts today and then have it revised on the only other day off I have (Thursday!)

I hate leaving things to the last minute but I've been super nervous about these essays.

When I was younger, my uncle had open heart surgery at Mount Sinai so that was always the 'ho la la' hospital to me. NYP is amazing too. I haven't heard of the cancer center to be honest.

Any reason you want to turn things in by mail?

I sent in all the paperwork through express mail and turned in my application yesterday. The SON received it today.

I wanted to turn it in by mail so I can be DONE with it and focus on my microbiology exam.

Now the waiting begins...

Oh and I participated in the online chat again and the new hospital opening in April will include the children's hospital. That's exciting because I'm interested in pediatrics or the NICU.

Hopkins is very good at self advertisement. That is not to say my classmates did not love the program - many did. But even they tended to whine alot to get what they wanted out of it. As a minority male, I admit some bias, but a good number of people from my graduating class share my perspective.

The program does not justify its costs- that's my primary point. I could have had an education of equal, if not better, value elsewhere for a 1/4 of the price. At the end of the day it comes down to what you value the most. Hopkins has alot of resources that many other places don't, but at the end of the day you'll come out on a level playing field.

I'm really happy for you that you finished it up. Sadly I'm still working on it. I'm also including a cover letter explaining my past grades on my academic transcript.

Microbiology is such a fun subject but tough on testing. Good luck on it!

You guys, I really can't wait to find out of their decision. It's super exciting!

I really appreciate that. I do like their resources but you have a very valid point. I felt the same exact way coming out of my previous college. I always felt that I did not need to have as much debt as I do now if I had attended a community college for the first two years. It wasn't a school I was crazy about and kind of a last option.

That being said, I have decided I should choose a school I really love versus one that seems 'practical'. Either way, nursing school is going to be pricey and if I'm shelling out money I want it to be a school that I love to death. BUT if I can find a school that I love to death and is cheaper...well who doesn't want to save money?

Could you offer any other suggestions for nursing schools similar to JHU?

It's kind of like any other purchase I would make though. Say I could get a Liz Claiborne handbag but then if I put more money into it, I could get a Marc Jacobs bag. Both do the job of holding my items very well but one has superior quality and design. One will make me a lot happier versus the other one. I'm not going to buy a ton of handbags so why not get the one I love? lol Maybe my POV is flawed but I look at it that way.

STILL, thank you very much for the info.

Hey guys!

Quick update! I talked to admissions staff and just so you know you can pay the application fee by credit card (instead of money order) by calling their 'Student Accounts' office at 410-955-1243.

The deadline is November 1 11:59 p.m. and postmark deadline is November 1st as well. Hopefully though no one will be waiting until the very last minute! Kind of like what I'm doing but yea...

Also wow everyone is so friendly and funny over the phone! I mean they're cracking jokes with me and everything. Even the student accounts lady! The person who I spoke to at admissions was a student and unfortunately she wasn't able to disclose the volume of applications. So no telling what competition is like. She had to give the generic answer of 'it's a competitive program'.

Also in case you don't know already, you can submit your essays through an email attachment. When I asked in terms of what format is okay she mentioned that whatever application materials they do not have, they will email me back for. Apparently they are very responsive through email so that makes me feel good.

Okay so here's to hopefully only a month and a half of waiting!

Hey all!,

I just submitted my application last week for the BSN/MSN fall entry option for the midwifery program! I have applied early decision and am getting very nervous! I am a current undergraduate but have some experience in women's health, volunteering and shadowing. I am very excited about potentially attending Johns Hopkins - I am very involved in research, both personal and departmental, and would love the opportunity to continue that next year.

Anyone know more information about the interview process? I was looking through the previous thread for last year and it seemed like people found out about interviewing fairly quick after the deadline.

Is anyone else applying to the midwifery program?

Crossing my fingers for all of us!
