My School is Gone!

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I was supposed to start the semester yesterday. I was supposed to graduate in May with my FNP. My school is in New Orleans. I have no school to go back to. I know most schools will only accept 12 hr graduate transfer hours. I have only 10hrs left to graduate from the program I was in.

I wonder what will happen now?

Unfortunately, I have been in disasters as well...........

I am sure that arrangements will be made for you to finish your schooling, there are just other things with more of a priority. Take care of yourself and family and firends first.........things will get tsken care of, they always do. But school should be the least of your worries right now.

Suzanne,

I absolutely agree with you.

For the record, I've read news articles online indicating assistance of all kinds offered from around the world, including at one count 35 nations. For example, Kuwait offered millions worth of oil and millions in cash (as well they should). Saudia Arabia offered lots of cash. Germany offered high speed pumps and whatever else we may ask for. The Netherlands offered expert engineering assist with levy construction (they have lots of experience since they are a country below sea level). Britain offered and delivered lots of MREs. Canada and other countries offered medics and search and rescue teams. Other countries offered cruise ships. Small countries from eastern europe even offered what they could. Iran offered oil, but we turned it down. Castro offered lots of medical help, I think we turned it down. It has not been lost around the world that we so generously help everywhere.

It is gratifying to know that we have not been forgotten in our hour of need. I'm sure there are those around the world that think, "The US is such a rich country--they can take care of themselves," but the reality is that a disaster of this magnitude hits hard. In addition to the tangible forms of assistance--and I hope those in charge of receiving it express our sincere gratitude--the solidarity and the concern mean as much, if not more.

Incidentally, I don't know about Cuba, but the aid from Iran was refused because it had political conditions attached to it and was not going to be aid so much as a bargaining chip.

I'm glad there are people around the world who see us as more than just a piggy bank.

Hi, thank you for all of the prayers and offers of support to our state. It is truely, truely amazing.

I just found out that Loyola University New Orleans (where I attended) will definitely be closed all semester (not surprised by this info. but it is finally official).

The other jesuit universities around the U.S. are offering to let us take online classes that will be transferred back to LOYNO if and when we are able to return Jan 2006.

Is there anyone who has info. on these schools and if they have a FNP program? I know there is info on the web, but I am very bogged down as I have become the "nonofficial" communication center for the members of my class. I am very fortunate to have internet access and am able to sometimes recieve phone calls and make outcoming calls.

We still have 6 members of our class unaccounted for. I heard from one classmate (my partner I worked with on research project) today THANK YOU GOD, I had been so worried about him, I knew he had stayed for the storm. He finally got a generator running today and contacted me. I still have another classmate in Covington who has been in her home living with a generator and 10 family members. The only contact they have is an AM radio that catches one station. She has been able to contact me twice, I am relaying info. to her family and friends to let them know she and her family are alive.

One classmate was last heard from working at Charity the night of the storm. If you have watched the news, the conditions are very upsetting about Charity.

School is last on my priority list of things to do right now, but when they call me that is all they are concerned about, they really don't know just how bad it is. I don't have the heart to tell them it is the least of their problems at this time. But any comforting info that I could pass onto them as they are "holed up" in their homes would help them.

I realize you'll also are starting the semester and bogged down and have lots to do, but if anyone has time to look the info up for me and post it here it would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you are all doing well in your classes, I know how stressful the beginning of the semester is! It is overwhelming, and you wonder how you will get everything accomplished that is expected in one semester. My prayers are with you while you try to juggle family, work and school.

Thank You

I saw that Johns Hopkins in Baltimore was allowing students to take classes from the hurricane-i lived in orlando last huricane season and was terrified by our 3 hurricanes(much smaller sizes but very scary). I experienced the highest level of anxiety and fear i have ever felt- there is this feeling of losing control of your life- my school closed for a week and i was out of work for 2 weeks (during nursing school no less)- of course you are experiencing worse but i sort of know how you feel and i am very sorry. dont question your feelings or let others tell you not to worry about certain things- you feel what you feel and you do what you have to do to get through situations. you exhibit the qualities of a great nurse and i am proud to share my profession with you! stay safe and let us know if you need anything

I agree 100%, and I will be assisting FEMA with the rescue efforts going on, really looking forward to seeing all the dead bodies floating in the water. SInce this is a nsg graduate student forum I only posted the loss of my educational future, which really is insignificant in light of things. But non the less, I felt the need to talk about. I really cannot mention this "trivial" concern to anyone around here, because of course they would think the same as you. In fact, I have so many losses right now I don't think you would even comprehend.

Please forgive me if I sounded insensitive posting such a trivial problem.

Thank you for your support.

Glasgow.....you are NOT insensitive.....at this moment, your mind is trying to sort through 100 things at once......I wholeheartedly feel you are undergoing more than any of us not there can even begin to comprehend......my thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the coastal areas....I hope each day brings a few more answers to the many, many problems that need solutions and that you can begin to see a little ray of sunshine. I am awaiting a phone call/email/ or other correspondance telling me where I can go to be of best help......I am packed and ready to roll! Bless you!

When you feel able :

Be proactive....contact the Board of Nursing and the State Board of Education regarding your records. Ask their Advise. Find any and all documentation of past courses and grades completed . Take deep breaths. Develop any routines and daily normal patterns that seem appropriate. Know you all are in our thoughts and intercessions.

Please contact some of the nursing schools in Oklahoma. I have read in the papers this state is very cooperative in transferring credits and assisting students and teachers relocate ASAP and resume education without having to pay out of state tuition. University of Oklahoma is a very good nursing school with NP programs and uis located in Norman.

I know several northern schools are trying to fit students in. In Pa, Mercyhurst, Gannon University, Edinboro University, and Penn State Behrend are accepting displaced students as are many others in surrounding states. As far as I know, they are giving full credit and you pick up where you left off, full transfer of credits. It is such a tragedy and so many people have had their lives upended. My prayers are with you. Take care.

Just about every school in Mobile, Alabama is accepting and working with individuals in damaged or destroyed schools. The is University of Mobile, Springhill College and University of South Alabama. Each school has a web site. A student from LSU will be starting with us on Monday. He isn't too far behind. We just started last Tuesday (9/6) from the hurricane.

You might beable to get an exception or some type of break. I just started with the University of South Alabama's PNP program and they are working with the students there. You might contact them to see if they can help you. It may be a matter of getting your records to be transferred. ?? Good Luck!!!!

Hey I agree, you need some place to vent! I have had some problems getting a preceptor here in the mid west and felt it was so small a problem compared to the students around the university! So vent!

Please don't think your question is trivial due to what we have suffered here. I'm a Baton Rougean, we suffered damage, those parishes above us have had no food, water, power for days without help and they have to come to whatever source of gas they can find for generators and the world knows nothing about them. We have many many evacuees here and know many NO people. We suffer for them. BUT, you don't need to disregard your needs. You have a future to work for also. Check with Southeastern Univ, School of Nursing in Hammond to see if they can help.....985-549-2000. God help all of those in need right now and help us all to give of ourselves to them and each other with supportive actions and comments.

Is there any administrative staff member that you may contact

about this ? I am sure that you share a common concern with

others at your school I sympathize with you.
