I got in. Now what?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I got into a great direct-entry FNP program. I remember the day I sent off my application, when I was writing the check for the application fee - I thought, "There goes my donation to their athletic fund!" (not that they are a big athletic school, just that I thought I would never get in).

I was - and am - attracted to the school because of its mission and program. I felt instantly out of place on campus, though. The student body strikes me as very privileged. Not at all where I come from! Could not be farther from my reality, in fact. I went to the cheapest in-state public university for my BA many years ago.

Now that I am in, I am wondering how I am going to get along. Has anyone else faced this? I know it may sound silly, but I really wonder how comfortable I am going to be. I am used to being around people who are a little more salt of the earth. When I interviewed, I was struck by how manicured everyone looked (yes, I know that was interview day, but you can tell by quality of clothes, hairstyles, etc.).

Regardless, I will do my best academically. Just looking for any advice from anyone who may have faced a similar situation.

Two things come to mind here. It doesn't hurt to dress up a little for class. You never know whom you are going to run into. Also, when it comes time for clinicals and you feel comfortable with underprivileged clientele and your classmates do not, you totally have the upper hand.

Best wishes in your studies.
