Direct Entry MSN Programs 2013

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Anyone on here applying to direct entry MSN programs that begin in summer or fall of 2013? I think I have finalized my list of programs to apply to, and I am beginning to get everything together to start applying this summer/early fall (I know this is rather early, but I'm a bit anxious and I was wondering if there was anyone else on this board who is just as excited as me!). I am pretty certain that I will be applying to UPenn, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Northeastern, University of Massachusetts, Boston College, Columbia, Vanderbilt, and Marquette. I am also applying to a few accelerated BSN programs in my state (Florida) - UCF and UF, for sure. I have all of my prerequisite courses completed, and currently have a 3.76, but my BS is still in progress and I have to retake the GRE this summer. I look forward to hearing from other people!

You think I should? I had spoken to someone at the school about it and they told me that was the recommended score. I have the score for verbal, but not for math. Maybe I should call them and see if they think it's worth me applying. I know some schools may not even look at you if you don't have a good GRE score, but I don't know if Penn is like that....

How's the application process going for everyone else?

Yeah you should that's what I'm doing with Penn and I was going to do that with Duke. But I didn't think Duke was worth chancing the money since I would rather apply to a BSN-MSN and hope for the best. I'm still working on personal statements and studying for the GRE in about 6 weeks or so. Most of my recommenders have sent in their letters so that's coming along as well. I honestly think schools look at everything in your file regardless unless they say specifically on their website that they do not. When I was looking in to CA schools websites would say " If you do not have a GPA of 3.0 we cannot look at your application at this time" but none I had looked at ever said that about GRE scores including the ones not in CA. Mostly I think because of high volume of applicants and low budgets leading to small cohorts accepted. Penn is well funded and I would be surprised if they did not accept a good percentage of their applicants.

Hey Hopeful and Morgan,

My GREs doesn't fully meet recommended scores either. I fell short on the verbal but did alright on the math and writing. I'm still going to give it a try because I've heard that Penn does look at your application from a holistic point of view. Plus their program is so great, I would like to know that I gave it a try.

Question: What is the address you used to submit your transcript to for Marquette Hopeful? I look online and even asked Karen Nest the coordinator for the nursing school but she said I should use the address on the application site. Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't find it. And it would be a waste of money if I sent my transcripts to the wrong address.

I'm close to sending my UCSF app by the end of this week and currently waiting for a few letter of recs before submitting Penn's, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Boston College. I'm still working on Yale's PS. I'm finding it a bit comprehensive and taking longer than I'd like. Has anyone heard about Yale's program? Then comes the fall schools that I'm hoping to have their application open up soon (Vanderbilt, Emory, and OHSU). I'm basically just waiting on letter of rec writers now :|

Hey Kdiem.

I didn't realize how many programs you are applying to. I got my yale PS reviewed a couple weeks back and it is hard. Every time I go to work on it I end up changing everything. I'm not too excited about the questions and how precise it all has to be but luckily we have about two month's before their deadline. I've read about the program on threads and it's pretty mixed. Most people enjoyed the faculty and some thought they were disorganized. For me Yale would be a nice school on paper to go to but other than that I'm really just going with a gut instinct. It's another holistic school to apply to with my specialty and I feel like you can't go wrong with an Ivy league. They have got to have good faculty and all the tools you need to be successful. Good luck with UCSF! I know there's is soon. Any stats for Marquette? average people accepted?

Hey guys! I am going to call tomorrow, and see what they think about not meeting the recommended GRE score before paying to submit the application. It's a lot of money that I could save, and I have a ton of other expenses this semester!

kdiem, I didn't submit my transcripts yet. That is something I have yet to do. I would think that the address provided on the application site would be the right one. I am working on doing that right now, actually!

I also have heard that Yale was a bit unorganized and the program was in a weird area of town, but I am sure that it is still an excellent program - it is Yale, after all! I have finished the JHU essays and now all I have to do is mail everything in. I am working on the Duke essays, also. I hope to have everything done within the next week! I'm going with my gut instinct also. I have good feelings about a few schools that I am interested in, so hopefully everything works out.

I don't think there are average stats for Marquette available on the internet, but they accept a pretty large number of students from what I remember hearing - around 50, I think. Maybe even more.

Question - I can still submit the application even if the LORs aren't complete, right?

One more question for anyone applying to JHU - did they change the format of submission for you guys, too? I had already "submitted" my online application and I went back to check on it and I'm kind of confused because it's different now and requires a different username and password than before (I didn't use NursingCAS)...

Hopeful

They upgraded their online application. You can still submit using the older version. But I ended up creating a new account on the new website because my letter of recs and essays could be uploaded this way. I prefer the new to old one.

Also Hopeful, is it okay to submit the Marquette application before all letter of recommendations come in? I read that it's best to submit your application before submitting other "documents" such as your transcripts, but I wonder if letter of recommendations applies too. I'm surprised that their statement of purpose was stated as "optional."

How long is the statement of purpose is supposed to be for Marquette??

The application deadline for Marquette is Dec 31st, correct?
