Community college courses

Nursing Students Post Graduate

I graduated with a BA in communication 2005 and now I am interested in becoming a nurse. I would like to go to Columbia or NYU. Columbia's accelerated program is my first choice. I have not taken the prereqs but I will be taking them at a community college. I would like to know if they look down on community college courses or are they acceptable?

I would ask them directly.

Out here in Cali, community college courses are seen as an asset by many programs because cc students are seen as bringing diversity to the program. At UCSF we have many students in all the schools that did some or all of their prereqs at a community college - I am one of them.

However, I think community colleges are not was highly regarded on the east coast. So ask them!

It varies school to school. I agree with czyja that you should check with the various schools that you are considering to see what they prefer to see in their applicants.

I am an Assistant Dean for Admissions/Financial Aid/Student Services. At my institution, I welcome community college courses as the prerequisites. In fact, non-degree students cannot get into A&P, Lifespan Development, or stats at the University of Virginia ---- these are restricted to UVa undergrads only (with priority going to 1st/2nd Year (freshmen & sophomores).

Here in Virginia, all 21 of the community colleges offer A&P and they follow an identical state-approved syllabus. I am very comfortable with these courses for my institution.

I did pretty much all of my prerequisites (the few others I did during my first undergrad degree) at my local community college, and I'm in the Columbia ETP program now. They really don't care where you did your prereqs (I know people in the program who did some online), as long as you have them done before you start. Good luck!

I agree with the others..check with the schools you're interested in first, and if they'll accept CC courses, then go for it. Why spend the extra money at a more expensive school if you don't have to? I took all of my pre-reqs at a CC, and every school I was accepted to had no issue with it.

traveler I am curious as to what your background and stats were?

i was looking into the columbia ETP program as well and was wondering what type of applicant they were looking for as far as prior work experience, prior degrees, GPA, and GMAT score.
