Hey all - I got into the FNP track! I applied twice. First time, I didn't even get an interview. Second time: I got in. Just finally glad to be on the road!

Congratulations, tiareeser!

I'm starting to think about moving to SF, finding housing, my husband's job hunt, etc. It's a lot to think about!

Hi,

Congrat to all of you!

I am applying to the MEPN program at UCSF in a month. I work on my application since October 2005 and am almost ready to apply. I only have my goal statement to write.

Here is the dilemna. I have a high GPA, a lot of community service experiences, language skills, and strong recommendation letters. BUT I am not a Native English speaker and I am struggling with the GRE (especially the verbal)! I took it last week but I think my verbal scores are too low. Maybe I should take it again next month? Any advice? What were your GRE scores?

Thanks

Bambou,

Did you get at least a 500 on the verbal GRE? I think at least a 500 on each section of the GRE is what the school expects. That being said, I think the variables other than GRE, including language skills, volunteer and international experience are much more important. The MEPN program is very diverse in just about every way, so remember the fact that UCSF really does value bringing different experiences to the table.

So, do your best on the GRE. If you didn't get at least 500, perhaps you could take it again. Even if it's not a stellar score, focus on all of the other strengths you listed (and of course your passion for advanced practice nursing) and you will probably be fine! Good luck!

Bamboo,

I just finished MEPN two weeks ago, and I got in with a very low quantitative score on the GRE. Too low to state publicly, yikes! You sound like a strong applicant, so you definitely have a chance. Don't give up. If you're going to take the GRE, take it as late as possible so you have time to study for it to improve your score. I don't remember for sure, but I think you have until aug. Good luck!

I just got my scores - 500v, 730q, 4w. It looks like other perspective applicants have posted their scores on different threads within the MSN/FNP/PhD forum. When I attended UCSF's MEPN information session, a person from the admissions office responded to a question on GRE scores and stated that a competitive score is 500 on each section. Not quite sure how to interpret the "competitive" statement. He also emphasized that GRE scores are just one criteria.

The two faculty members who presented at the information session emphasized "congruency between goal statement and chosen specialty" and also volunteer work. Good Luck!

A couple of other notes. Since UCSF is a California public school, my understanding is preference is given to California residents (your profile suggests you are a CA resident). There were some comments made at the info session that a high GPA may offset not so great GRE scores and knowledge of a second language was also a definite plus. Good Luck.

Nurse Re: Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?
I came across an interesting document on UCSF's website

http://www.ucsf.edu/senate/2005-2006...0statistics%22

The table on page 27 (UCSF School of Nursing Faculty Council Strategic Plan) under column labeled "Progress to Date"

MEPN: R&R, /DIVA, MEPN Council, with JM-H: Planning for anticipated increase in MEPN program. Investigated application & acceptance rates of URMs in MEPN program.Investigated GRE score statistics that show URMs have overall lower than average scores. Since no one knows how well GRE scores predict success in MEPN program, this may be an area where URMs may be unnecessarily and systematically excluded. Discussing altering screening criteria and tracking results. MEPN Council and Screening Ctte plans to alter screening form to decrease impact of GRE scores & increase importance of life experiences. Investigating potential barriers to advancing qualified applicants to interview and applicant-ranking phases. Recommended Screening Committee recruit diverse RNs and advanced practice nurses from our community settings to participate in interview process. interview process. R&R supported Judy Martin-Holland’s proposal to designate six MEPN slots for the Face of Nursing Award. The proposal is aimed to increase diversity by allowing a separate selection process for students who might otherwise be excluded from admission, but who can contribute to our goal of promoting a future nursing workforce that reflects the population of California. The three categories of students targeted are the following: students from the UC system (because they represent the top 12.5% of California high school graduates and do not have access to a generic nursing program on another UC campus), students from federally designated underserved rural areas, and students who are among the first generation of their families to go to college. Proposal has been reviewed and given preliminary approval by the school attorney, the Dean, and by UCOP. Funding opportunities are being explored for scholarships...
A lot of other interesting information in the document. Good luck to everyone that applied.

Has anyone heard back from UCSF about the status of their application? I received an email a few days after the October 2nd deadline, and then silence. After so much work preparing for the application, this silence is killing me!

I received a letter today stating "Thank you again for your interest...At this time we have all the materials necessary for your application to be reviewed. We expect this initial phase of the review process to be completed during the first week of December and we anticipate sending out notification of whether or not you will be invited to interview by mid-December..."
