I am kinda planning on taking the nursing fundamentals class in Torrance, but it is such a pain. I live in San Francisco and was hoping to stay as long as posisble to save money, finish my lease, etc...but now it looks like I am going to have to quit my job at least a month and 1/2 early and get a hotel room or something down in Torrance.

Any ideas? Why is UCLA like the only place requiring this Nursing Fundamentals class BEFORE you start?

regarding my last posting, is anyone accepted to the mecn program planning coming from san francisco and/or commuting on the weekends for the 3 week fundamentals class? or has anyone found this course somewhere else or oline?

also, have students really calculated this program costing 70k a year? my cost estimate with housing and cost of living was nowhere near this amount.

I'm estimating 50K...and that's NOT being particularly frugal...Where are you planning on living at the start of the program? Would it possible for you to move in a month early?? I guess that extra month of cost is kind of a drop in the bucket in terms of cost in the long run....Has anyone heard back from UCLA housing btw???

How does the UCLA MECN program cost 70k a year???

I looked on line and I thought I saw 12-14k a year.

Hello everyone!
I was admitted to the MECN program to start this fall. I am finishing up an A&P class right now through UCLA extension, will be taking Microbio at LATTC in a few weeks and also the nursing fundamentals course in Torrance. If all goes well, I should be starting the program this fall. I was also under the impression that the CNA course would be at UCLA, but apperently not. Should we register through Rhonda (UCLA) or SCROC?

I'm planning to apply to MECN program this year. Does anyone know GPA requirements or the lowest GPA acceptable?

russiangirl, the application evaluation criteria given to us at an open house earlier this year include the following two related to grades:

1. minimum GPA of 3.0 or better in academic courses (last 60 sem/90 qtr units of BA/BS)
2. minumum grade of C (B preferred) for prerequisites

other criteria are life/volunteer experience, statement of purpose (economical, educational, social disadvantage), letters of rec.

(this doc was posted on the website before. for some reason, the application evaluation criteria link no longer works.)

i am sure if you have exceptional experience in other areas, perhaps lower grades can be considered. but you should schedule an appt with the counselors or go to an open house. good luck!

Thank you, kim00mik. I will definitely go to an open house, but I don't think I have a chance to be accepted since my GPA in BS is 2.85, even though my GPA in pre-requisites is 3.6

hi russian girl, remember that the GPA in BA is calculated based on the last 60 sem/90 qtr units. also, since you have a very high GPA for pre-reqs, it shows that you have the potential and are committed to achieving academic excellence. i sincerely hope you do not let that 2.85 discourage you from trying! few things in life are for sure. if nursing is what you want to do, then, to me, the $60 appl fee and few days of your time to complete the application are reasonable risks to take for a chance at a new life, don't you think?

good luck. i wish you the best!
