Advice on getting PICU experience
- 0Jul 27, '13 by hoosiergatorI am not yet a nurse, but I am interested in PICU and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of ways for me to gain some exposure/experience in PICU before nursing school. I don't think they allow people to volunteer in PICU, at least not at my local hospital, but I would like to learn as much about it as possible.

However, as in most critical care environments, our volunteers primarily support the clerical staff, not the nurses. They answer phones, distribute trays, and such things.
I think healthcare experience (CNA for example) is much, much more important that volunteer experience in a particular unit.

AdminWhile CNA experience is definitely valuable, you might be able to at least have a chance to familiarize yourself with PICU by volunteering at Ronald McDonald House. You'll make connections with families there who may at some time have a child in PICU. If you have developed a relationship with the family you may then be able to volunteer to spend time with the sick child, reading stories or just being present.
