Hi, I took the CGFNS in 1993 and that was a long time ago. However, CGFNS exam questions are very similar to NCLEX-RN questions - the only difference being CGFNS is a paper and pencil exam and the NCLEX-RN is taken on a computer.

From the CGFNS website:

"The CGFNS Qualifying Exam is a one-day examination that tests your knowledge and understanding of nursing as it is taught and practiced in the United States today. The CGFNS Qualifying Exam uses objective, multiple-choice questions and is designed by testing experts to help you predict your likelihood of passing the U.S. registered nurse licensure examination, which is called the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, or NCLEX-RNŽ examination."

"The CGFNS examination is divided into two different exam booklets: Nursing, Part 1 and Nursing, Part 2. Nursing, Part 1 includes 150 questions and is given in the morning session. You have two hours and 30 minutes to complete this portion and then have a lunch break. After lunch, you take Nursing, Part 2 which is composed of 121 questions. You have two hours to answer these questions."

I used NCLEX-RN review materials to prepare for my CGFNS exam. I found that these were very helpful in passing my exam at the time.

Questions now are quite different between the two exams. CGFNS focuses on patho-phys of a disease, etc. NCLEX-RN knows that you have been tested multiple times on the same information in school, they want to know what you will do with the information that you have learned in school. Theu focus on priority style questions.

i took my cgfns, last march 14,2007. After i received my result, for almost 3 months since then.i can't concentrate in doing my nclex study plan.i need to take a break.Even though, i passed the cgfns exam, and more than the score i am praying for.
What bothers me most, was the style of the exam.I read the cgfns guide and its rationale for 10 times.Thank god, i read saunders and know a lot of management.I guess, cgfns is not only about patho, they tend to give a lot management lately, esp. E.R situations.
One thing, during our exam, they give us only 30 mins for lunch.I am glad, i have a friends who share their food to me.
my advice, for cgfns just expect the unexpected.you must know, the hallmark of sign and symptoms of any dieases.
The thing i hate most about cgfns exam, its time pressured.i finish my exam, 30 mins before the time. And i dont have guts to recheck my answer due to anxiety, but the lord anwers my prayers.

Glad to hear that you did well on this exam.

But this thread is quite old and there are only four states out of the entire US that still require it, so no reason for most to even be sitting for it any longer. It does not meet the requirements to get a license in any state, all still need to sit for the NCLEX exam.
