What's the distinction between MAN and MN in the Philippines?

I'm confused about these 2 post grad title in Nursng- Master of Arts in Nursing and Master In Nursing.
When i was still studying, my Clinical Instructors then are taking MAN in one of the oldest University in province
while some are taking MN or Master in Nursing in another university? What's the difference??

My classmate then told me that according to the Clinical Instructor who is taking MN, after their masterals, they cannot opt to take the Doctorate program. It would be the highest education they can attain of. While for MAN they can pursue the Doctorate program if they want.

please enlighten me.
thanks.

Hi,

MAN is usually by taken Nurses who wants to be Manager,Chief Nurse or Dean, MAN has Thesis required before being conferred with the degree, but nowadays there are MAN program that is Non-thesis offered by some colleges and universties. On the other hand MN is usually or mostly taken by Clinical Instructors who do not want write thesis.

I think your classmate is wrong with the statement that MN cant pursue doctoral studies, in fact there members of the Board of Nursing here in the Philippines who are MN graduate but they finished Ed.D

hope this helps

Lightbulb Re: What's the distinction between MAN and MN in the Philippines?
Since CHED has not issued any guidelines or did any branch of the government issue IPR(implementing rules and regulations), the details of these degrees vary from school to school. Some schools who do not offer MN, just have MAN and MSN, with the former being the shorter(and lesser in units/subjects to earn the degree). Some have the MN and MAN, with the latter bearing the longer time to finish(more units to earn the degree). Some have the MN program as the non-thesis, while the MAN as the one with the thesis. Some schools even have MN degrees that have thesis in their program.

I think it's a matter of preference on the part of the school, which degree to offer...So far, I have not seen a particular school in the Philippines that offers all three degrees altogether...They just make a choice.

If given a choice, I'd go for one that bears the MSN degree, because for me personally, it's the one that clearly indicates your advancement from the BS to the MS degree.

nurseharbee,

thank you,, got a clearer idea now..

The 2 titles are related in such a way that both are based on coursework,
some research or thesis , though (as you are well aware of ) there are some universities now who offer non-thesis program.

Masteral in Nursing (MN), more clinical, focuses on clinical practice, possibly the reason why more Clinical Instructor's choose this one as it tends to lead ém as Nurse Practitioner. On the other hand, Master of Arts in nursing (MAN) gives one the ability to broaden their learning futher than pure clinical paractice eg. leadership, policy making, special courses from other disciplines..

Best of LUck in your post grad studies, nurseHarbee!
