Grand plans, no doubt. But as we Filipinos say, "Libre naman mangarap" (Dreaming doesn't cost anything). And I say grand plans are better than no plans at all .

I certainly agree!!! Let us keep those smiles and be happy. We are fortunate that we got our education and have a very promising profession. All we need to do is act on it, be patient and hope always for the best. Worrying will lead us to nowhere.

To Sariah, you are doing a wonderful job taking care of your family and sacrificing. Don't worry, God will soon give you the reward that you deserve.

I know what it feels like not being able to help out in the expenses. I look at it as a treasury bond...you have to wait before you will get your money. I am telling my family that soon I will work for them, they just have to bear with all my expenses.

So far I have completed my checklist:
1. Passed the NLE
2. Passed NCLEX
3. Passed IELTS
4. Got a petition from employer
5. Filed visa screen

All I need to do is hone my nursing skills. Yes, it is so hard to land a local job since I don't make up stories. I am a lousy liar. Most of the hospitals will not accept applicants if they are already an NCLEX passer. Right now, I will offer my services for free as a volunteer nurse. I am not a hero or something but opportunities are narrow and I don't want my nursing skills suffering. I am also taking my MAN, so I get to do some teaching.

We can do this!!!

I admire those people who got dreams, visions or plans than those who were afraid to have one because they might just get disheartened when everything fails.

Just like you guys, before I became a registered nurse, I was bind by obligations that I have to take as a sign of gratitude to those whom we owe a lot. After failing my first NLE, I was forced to get odd jobs just to help the family from sustaining itself, to the extent that I took B.S. Agriculture to help my father go back to our piece of land where he can continue working as a farmer not as a mechanic anymore. For my friends and to others, it seems that I am not serious enough of becoming a nurse but deep inside I was dying to become one. By year 2000, I was told by my mother that my obligation is past overdue, and so I took and pass NLE. Just like you guys, again, it seems that the world for nurses was too harsh that you have to pay your slot to become a trainee in one of the hospitals nationwide. But mind you, I got my first job a thousand kilometers from where we were living. I volunteer myself to work in a place where sick people barely got good nursing services due to compromised peace and order in their place.am not trying to tell you that you have to follow what i have gone to because it's very difficult to live in a place where strangers sometimes considered a good target for cold bloodied insurgents. but I don’t have regrets on making that silly decision because right now, I am working abroad as a company nurse that covers combat lifesaving as I am a certified on that aspect in one of the US military base outside their homeland. Guys, it’s only a matter of grabbing the opportunities being laid in your front door. I am not a US citizen to do this though I like to become one. All you have to do is to grab everything that later on you can put into use when the right time will come.

As of now, my plans are:
Ø To go on vacation this July
Ø Review for NCLEX
Ø Back to work and get supplementary review via online
Ø Go to the states and take the NCLEX hopefully on the last quarter of this year
Ø If I fail, continue working just like nothing happens and wait for another opportunity to come
Ø If I will pass NCLEX, update my resume and qualification for salary adjustment
Ø Have a taste of living stateside for a while and back to where I am working right now.
Ø Save money until its time to go home for good and replace my father doing some farm works as I was also born a farmer.

Good luck to all of us!!!

I am really impressed with the people here posting their plans amidst other RNs who are in dilemma on what to do with their nursing career. I strongly believe that if your heart is set on nursing, you will take that path though sometimes it can be delayed due to other concerns. Just set your plans through that path if you really have passion for this job.

If you were brought up in your province, then it would be the best time to go back there and look for a nursing job. Manila hospitals are already congested with nurses available and your only luck is the training that they offer. Working as a nurse is worthwhile even though receiving a low salary than doing trainings where you have to pay the hospital. It will only be an advantage if the hospital will absorb you after the training. Keep those plans concrete as possible, like which hospital choices will you apply to, set deadline or due date, etc. As of the moment, being realistic is the key than painting a blurry picture.

Wow northst4r!!!
That is inspiring. Tomorrow I will start my volunteer program. The staff are super pleasant. I also enrolled for MAN. I talked to other volunteers that are also in the program who are ahead of me. They have nothing but praises for this hospital. The training head is so generous in imparting knowledge. I think this is better than not doing anything.

Default Re: What are your plans as a RN?
wow. I admired all your dreams.

as for my plans,
first, to be a RN by August 2008
second, I'm currently having my review in English Conversation Fluency in SP (just taking the chance - because I have 1 year free review. I just enrolled in that course last year. and also, that would help me in preparing myself for a job interview.)
third, to find a job - as a call center agent (to be more at ease in speaking the language/to develop my conversation fluency using the English language. It might also help me in IELTS. I also want to earn already, be somewhat independent and to buy and do the things that I want.) I might also enroll in a training of Redcross while waiting for the result of the job interview.
fourth, to find a job as a RN - after I get my license. and if I can't get a job as a RN, I'll continue with my job in a call center.
fifth, I also want to enhance the other aspect of myself. I love nursing - I love what I had learned and experienced in this field. Yes, I graduated BSN, but I don't want to locked myself in just one area. I want to try interior designing too (even though I'm not good in drawing. I'm kinda afraid in taking that course. but I want to try it.) I also want to save up for voice and cooking lesson, and a seminar in photography. I don't know, but I really want to learn a lot of things. I want to learn things that I could use and also, as a personal growth - I love learning. But my fifth plan would come true after I had saved up enough money and I think, I'm already working in a hospital by that time (because after working in a call center, I want to work in a hospital for a year or two.)
sixth, I would also attend seminars in nursing or do anything that would update myself in the profession.
seventh, I want to work as a nurse in Australia (I really want to stay in NZ--my dream.. after I saw the documentary in that country 4+ years ago..but mom told me that I don't know anyone there, unlike in Australia, my Aunt and her family are there. I know, I could visit that country when I'm an Australia - they're near each other.) I also want to travel in a lot of places here on Earth.
eight, I would go back here in the Philippines and work as a nurse and help those who are in need of my service after I saved up enough money to build an apartment (as a source of living) and to live here already..

those are my plans.. I hope that they would come true. I would really work hard for it.

thank you for this thread.. I love reading the dreams of other people..

Apple25 I also admire your plans...I am not going to discourage you on your plans to take call center as a temporary solution to not finding a job. I have tried but most call center companies are no longer taking nurses as agents since they know that eventually you will resign and have a real nursing job. I tried it but since I really can't deny the fact that I intend to become a nurse they did not consider me for the job post. I am really a lousy liar. I passed their exams but failed the final interview. It is quite understandable that HR will consider somebody who will stay longer with the company.

thank you misspowers I think, I'll think very well for the white lies that I would tell them in order to work in their company or in a call center thank you very much again

After passing my NLE last Dec. '07, I trained in the Red Cross for the basics-- 1st aid and CPR (they weren't provided at school) then while waiting for the next IV Therapy schedule and ACLS, i had started to work as a Company Nurse so that I could be able to pay for my own trainings and help out at home. I know volunteering is the best way to go but i can't rely anymore on my parents for money-- and training in hospitals ain't cheap.
Also, after the NCLEX (hopefully within this year) I'd try my hand out in EMT Training. If and when I accomplish all these, I'd look out for more training programs just to keep myself in tiptop shape before applying for actual hospital experience.
