you see i'm a naturalized american citizen studying here in the Philippines and i need some advice/help. I'm graduating soon and i was wondering if i have to take the licensure exam in the Philippines even though i want to work in the states?I mean, is it really necessarY since i'm not planning on working here after graduation.. your advice would be great...tnx

one of the requirements in order to take the local board exam is you have to be a Filipino citizen. technically speaking, you cannot take that exam because you are not a citizen of the Philippines. You need ask your home state board of nursing if what is the requirements for nursing licensure. I assume you live in Florida?

You cannot write the NLE exam, you are now longer a citizen of there. But you do need to follow the requirements for a foreign trained nurse for licensure. And Florida requires the CES, done thru CGFNS. Recommend that you do it thru CGFNS and not the other ones that FL accepts in case you ever wish to go onto grad school.

And for those others that are reading this: If it becomes mandatory to take the NLE to work in the US, as it was in the past when the CGFNS exam was still required; the green card will not exempt you from that requirement since you are still a citizen of the Philippines and hold a passport from there.

let me correct myself..actually i'm an american citizen. i was born in america, but i'm studying in the phlippines..so that means i can't and don't have to take the nle here. i get it..hehe. and i'm not sure what state to work in yet. and i have one more question. you see my university requires each graduating student to complete 25 cases whether it be cord dressing, suture, etc to take the nle. so i was wondering if i was to take one of the state boards, would they require me to complete a certain amount of cases too? or would i need these cases as a requirment to work there??if not then i dont want to waste my time looking for these cases if they aren't required in my situation..hehe tnx...

Hi....actually those cases you've mentioned are required by the Phil. BON for the NLE, i'm not sure if it's part of the BSN curriculum in Phil. so try to consult the dean of nursing in your school regarding your situation....so assuming that you can omit those cases, IMO it's better still to take those cases so that you can experience what is it like in the real world specially in surgical and L & D areas.

Anything that is required by the students there is required of you. Only the fact that you cannot write the NLE, but anything else, and you need to have the training in it. And do not do it for the reason that it is needed for the NLE, but so that you can become a decent nurse.

You are going to have it harder as it is, since you will be considered a foreign nurse and have to meet all of those requirements for licensure. The only thing that is different for you is the immigration, but licensure has nothing to do with that.

You need to do whatever your University requires you to do. it doesnt matter whether your an American citizen or your the Queen of England. those 25 cases you were talking about? you need that for Commission on Higher education ( CHED), although you are not going to go thru PRC for your licensure? CHED will not release your TOR if you dont complete those pain in the arsh cases, therefore you cannot apply for licensure in the US without the TOR, and oh yes, me and the rest of other American citizens in my class, did all that requirements too. start to complete it as soon as possible.By the way, its not a waste of time, trust me, its an advantage, its a learning experience. you dont get to do that if you are in US nursing school. enjoy your days as a student, because once its over? you will miss it.
