So sad what nursing and nurses in the Philippines are going through lately.
Just several years ago when the countries in Europe, the Middle East, the U.S., Canada, Australia and NZ imported so many Filipino nurses that the Philippines actually experienced a shortage of "trained and experienced" nurses, however briefly. There were talks of not just "brain drain" but a "brain hemorrhage" as thousands and thousands of Filipino nurses left for greener pastures outside the Philippines. This has made nursing a very popular career choice among the young and old Filipinos wishing for a better future... abroad.
Lately nursing has become too popular for its own good. There have been far too many Filipinos who enrolled and who are currently enrolled in nursing schools in the Philippines. Then several corrupt and idiotic Philippine government officials allowed the opening and the continued operation of sub-standard nursing schools. What the Philippines now have is a big mess. Too many Filipino nurses can't find jobs, and many will have zero chance to work as paid nurses in the Philippines.
Those who graduated from sub-standard nursing schools in the Philippines are at a greater disadvantage when it comes to getting a job overseas. For those who haven't worked as nurses for several years will lose their nursing knowledge and skills. What they have learned several years ago are now becoming obsolete.
Case in point, in our medical center here in San Francisco, Calif. some of the RNs who have been working in clinics are "scared" to work again in our Med-Surg. wards because their skills are no longer current. Our computer charting is being updated a few times a year, there are changes all the time. We are on the verge of also computerizing our MAR (Medical Administration Records). More modern equipments are being introduced every now and then. Therefore, if you are an RN in a modern hospital it is your personal and professional responsibility to keep up with all the changes that are happening in your profession.
Did you say haven't worked as a nurse in five years?
What???
Next applicant please.
