Is local boards really a reqt to apply for nclex?

Hi! I just recently finished my nursing degree. I don't have any plans of practicing nursing in my country. Can I apply for an nclex even if i didn't the local boards in my country? I'm planning to practice in California since my sister is already there. Any inputs or suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks.

California changed their requirements early this year and local license is a requirement and they are getting very strict on it. Some other states also require local license and expect more to follow. Also with retrogression and a several year waiting time would recommend you get nursing experience, may even want to consider another country. Most countries require a local license

Would recommend you get local license

CA most definitely now requires the local license before they will grant permission for you to test.

And since you are looking at five years plus for a chance at a green card, then you need to be getting experience someplace and without the local license, it will be impossible.

Definitely get the local license passed.

(You also do not apply for the NCLEX exam, you will be applying for licensure as an RN.)

the question is are you a us citizen or greencard holder or dual citizen?

if you are us citizen then you may just have a letter of explanation to bon in cali why you did not take the nle then they may just waive the need for local license.

if your dual citizen there is no reason why you will not take the nle since you are stil in jurisdiction of philippines and you cant take the exam.

and if green card holder still the same you are still a holder of philippine passport and no reason why you cannot take it.

where do you belong ?

As the previous poster states, in what capacity are you i?. Only if you are not a citizen of the Philippines are you exempt on sitting the local boards, if dual citizen or work visa then you have to sit the exam, Ca will expect it and will ask for conformation documents from the board stating you can not sit the local boards, just a letter from yourself is no longer accepted

My nephew is graduating on October locally, and plans to take the NCLEX exam immediately after. He already has a greencard and his family is waiting for him in California already. Would a letter of explanation regarding his status be sufficient enough for him to be exempted to take the local boards?

Thanks and more power to this community!

No, Having a greencard means there is no reason why he does not sit the exam. Ca will question him on this and we have seen a few posting already that Ca have pulled them up and will not give them permission to sit NCLEX without local exam. This was recently and despite proving letter stating they have no intention on working in the Philippines and that they have already got their GC. He will not be able to take the exam immediately after he graduates. As a foreign nurse it will take him approx 4 months before permission is granted and as I said before he is not exempt from sitting the exam

It is four to six months before he will be permitted to sit for the NCLEX exam, and that is provided that he meets the requirements for CA BRN. It is never going to be immeditate to write the exam as he cannot even apply until a completed set of transcripts exists. But CA has additional requirements that he will need to meet.

Having a green card means that he is still a citizen of the Philippines, and therefore CA will require the local license of him. It is never waived for that reason and they have been quite strict about it since January of this year.
