training takes 7 weeks in the classroom (280hrs M-F 0900H-1700H) then you will have your OJT (250hrs) in your EMS of choice so that you can have your PSEMT certification as an EMT-B. it's your option if you want to get registered by the Australasian registry of EMT's, you no longer have to take the certification exam coz they have direct reciprocity. EMT-B(basic) is just the first level. it's up to you if you want to reach up to EMT-P(paramedic) level. but, it really is costly.. Php. 20K for the 7 week training.
hey man, thanks a lot! i forgot i created a thread here and didnt get to visit the site again, thanks for the very informative post.

Re: EMT courses.
No, I don't think they have a branch in Davao. You just have to go to Manila in order to study. Great supplemental knowledge for RNs, and also a possible alternative career. You'd really have fun while learning, especially on your OJT!

Re: EMT courses.
there's a bigger market for EMT's in the middle east, some even claim of having greater pay compared to nurses. some emt's also qualify as medics and even as safety offcers in the oil and gas industry like in oil rigs and refineries w/c is a very lucrative position.

Re: EMT courses.
work? ummm.. nope! experience? yes! haha! same as for nurses my friend. but unlike the problem in nursing where there are many institutions that may hire but do not actually hire, most EMS in the Philippines are volunteers organizations such as those affiliated with volunteer fire and rescue groups and local rescue units. some of the local rescue units w/c are under the local government of cities and municipalities are makati rescue, marikina rescue, qc rescue, pasig recue, ugong rescue (i think it's only a volunteer group, im not sure) etc. there's also red cross. you can also have your experience as a volunteer/trainee in some private ambulance/EMS such as AeroMed and Lifeline rescue where you also have the chance to get hired. MMDA, PAGCOR, and BFP also have their own EMS.
= im not so sure if all the EMS I mentioned accept volunteer/trainees.

Re: EMT courses.
it's ok. im not a paramedic, jsut an EMT. im not sure how long it would take but our instructor once said that it could take you six years if you take the EMT to Paramedic path. but in some countries there is a 4 year straight to paramedic program, somewhat like a BS program i think. in some US states, there are one year straight to paramedic programs, and in some areas, nurses can challenge the paramedic exam, and if you pass, you'll be an RN and a paramedic at the same time. bu still, many suggest that you take the longer path where you start as an EMT, in that way you gain more experience while climbing up the ladder.
here in the Philippines, there are no Paramedic course being offered. mostly it's EMT-B that is being offered, but there are some institutions that offers EMT-D after you complete the EMT-B and the required OJT hours. EMT-D (defibrillation) is the next level after EMT-B in the Australasian Registry of EMT's (AREMT) w/c has a different grading compared to that in the US. (there is no EMT-D level in the US-NREMT/National registry of EMT's grading)
