It actually used to be a five year course in the Philippines. Most of the nurses that I work with from PI went thru that type of training, and they are the ones that built up the reputation of the PI nurse. Their skills when they started working were great.
And maybe that is what is needed again there, or at least the one year of internship that was required back then. There was six months of rural medicine as well as so many deliveries that you needed to do in a hospital, as well as at homes of the mothers to even be able to get your license.
Clinical training is definitely lacking, and there are a few schools where it is well known to be almost non-existent. And this needs to change. Hospitals in the US are well aware of what it going on there.
